www.wwtonline.co.uk | WWT | AUGUST 2014 | 11 Comment R esponsibility for a company's sustainability is a frighteningly broad remit. From mitigating impacts via waste, energy and carbon reduction initiatives, employee engage- ment and supply chain management to CSR policy and emissions reporting. Different sectors may focus on different elements while some issues will be more or less important depending on the company. However, what is incred- ibly clear from this issue of WWT, is that water, and, therefore the water sector, plays a pivotal role in creating a more resource-efficient, cleaner future. As an energy-intensive industry, the opportunities afforded by effective en- ergy management and usage reduction Doing nothing is not an option are huge. Understanding consumption is now business-critical for the water sector. But with so many stakeholders, assets and managers across each busi- ness, where on earth do you start? For Wessex, the answer is by building something bespoke. Its Energy Hub, designed and built in house, combines information from 2,500 operational sites – more than 23 million rows of data per year! But it's not just the tech that's bespoke, crucially, the access to it can be tailored, allowing different teams or individuals to access the energy picture they need via their own dashboards – from a granular level, where identify- ing pump breakdowns is driving lots of little savings, to the macro level, where tariff analysis is saving hundreds of thousands of pounds a year. Efficiency undoubtedly represents a massive financial and carbon saving for the water sector, but onsite generation offers similarly lucrative and sustain- able opportunities. The most prevalent technology here is anaerobic digestion, offering operators the double whammy of sludge treatment and energy genera- tion in one. And with the biggest plant of its type in the world, the UK water WILL PARSONS MANAGING EDITOR wwtedit@fav-house.com industry and AD supply chain is well- placed to become a global leader. However, sustainability isn't just about driving down the bottom line, or driv- ing up the top line, it's about business continuity. Climate change adaptation will be key. As Lord Smith warns in our leader interview this issue, climate change is the single biggest challenge for the water sector and with the pos- sibility of more extreme weather events more o"en, both the sector and water- intensive industry needs to act now. Take Wyke Farms for example, a na- tional manufacturer, reliant on water to create its products and with no access to mains water. Abstraction posed no problems until business growth cou- pled with drought conditions forced them to tanker in water to ensure no interruption to operations. Their solu- tion, a wastewater recovery and treat- ment system, ensures climate change impacts related to water have been mitigated as far as possible, future- proofing the business. And ultimately that's what sustainability means. It isn't just about being a green business in the future – it's about being in busi- ness in the future. 1990 -1995 AMP1 1995 - 2000 AMP2 2 000 - 2005 A M P 3 2 0 0 5 - 2 0 1 0 A M P4 2010 - 2015 AMP5 QED supporting 20 years of AMP cycles with Water Quality and Leaka g e M an ag e m en t Eng i n e e r i n g … with many more years in the pipeline Quantum Engineering Developments Ltd.
