Dan is also a non- executive director of sector skills council EU Skills, and the National Skills Academy for Power. U ntil April last year, Amey did not have a presence in the water sector. But that changed when its Spanish parent, Ferrovial, splashed out £385M to buy Enterprise. Since then Amey and Enterprise have gone through a process of integration, creating a group worth more than £2B, a workforce of around 21,000 employees, and operating in sectors such as utilities, justice services, waste management, asset management, aviation services and defence services, to name but a few. Its utilities business covers water, power, gas and metering, and the company is one of the UK's fastest growing consultancies, managing, improving and maximising the performance of a vast range of assets. Integration Through the acquisition of Enterprise, Amey has gained more than 40 years experience of the water sector. It provides clean and wastewater services, including network design and installa- tion, repair and maintenance and civil engineer- ing on both infrastructure and non-infrastructure works. Also, it upgrades and repairs around 300km of clean water pipes annually and undertakes more than 250,000 clean and wastewater repair and maintenance jobs across nationwide. Dan Holland, managing director utilities and defence at Amey, has been a part of the integra- tion process, which he says has been a challenge but the two companies provided a good strategic fit and both had similar drivers. Holland knew "legacy Enterprise" inside out having joined the company in 1995 as a trainee site agent and working his way up to managing director of utilities in 2006. He believes that history and experience has helped with the integratiion., which involved assembling a variety of 20 workstreams – IT, property, for instance. The process was all focused in a 12-month timeframe. "We achieved that objective, and renewed contracts in the process," he says. He is "very proud of what has been achieved". Recent contract wins include A £200M-plus deal with United Utilities and a £200M contract with Severn Trent Water. It is also part of the BBV alliance with Black & Veatch that has won a £240M contract for Scottish Water's capital investment programme covering six years from April 2015. Holland says Amey has also won a contract with Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW). Enter- prise had stepped in as an emergency contractor to provide a maintenance service for DCWW's water and sewerage aœer Daniel Contractors went into administration. Other water utility customers include Affinity Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water as well. Light Holland says the plan is to try and win more business in the South. Legacy Enterprise's business was in the North, but Amey wants to capture market share in the South as well. He sees Amey's asset management and consulting capability as being key moving forward, enabling the company to offer stand- alone or integrated service solutions for custom- ers. Being customer centric is a key focus, says Holland, and to "shine a light where we are excelling. It's about getting the right balance of economic solutions to their problems". Holland is approaching AMP6 with optimism, and says there is definitely evidence of change. dan Holland amey's utilities and defence managing director INTERVIEW WhaT you didN'T kNoW!
