The judges were impressed with the scalability of the technology, recognising its potential across the in- dustry. They summed it up when they said: "The technology correlates plas- tic pipes as easily as those on metallic pipes. It features four innovations, including sensors with a low noise floor, and a method top automatically calculate the velocity of sound waves in plastic pipes. With the number of plastic pipes installed in water utili- ties' asset bases, the potential of this technology is huge." • Perspectives "Initial meetings with STW took place ten years ago to discuss challenges they were facing with water supply and distribution. Together we identified that managing leaks was a priority. Despite no guarantee of a successful outcome STW funded a PhD student for three years to conduct research on the subject. "Large scale lab tests to generate leaks were undertaken. Tests under soil and at STW's Lake House were also run. The results were extremely positive and proved that there was an ideal spec for a successful correlator. A further three years were spent improving the research and development to produce the ideal correlator. "So practical problems could be experienced in the field a research- er was embedded with the STW Leak Team. "The resulting research and development was put into practice when Echologics was chosen as STW's commercial partner to manufacture a new generation of correlators."
