Since privatisation, the company has invested more than £450m to create a modern, thriving business that offers a range of shipping, distribution and logistics services. Bristol Port has an extensive water distribution network inside the port area that supplies water to a variety of commercial enterprises, offices and factories as well as serving the needs of international ships and liners visiting the port. However, the mains are very old and natural sediment had built up in the iron distribution water pipes. The Challenge Bristol Water, and its recently rebranded com- mercial team Water2Business (a joint venture with Wessex Water, see Innovation box out) began working with the Bristol Port Company in order to improve the pipe infrastructure and water quality both within the existing Bristol Water supply network feeding into the port and also within the port's own water distribution network. The three areas of improvement were clean- ing and maintenance of the major water main that supplies the port, improving the water qual- ity in the port's own water distribution network, and leakage control and pressure management of the port's network. A team of experts visited the site and re- viewed the pipeline infrastructure. They set up a sampling programme to identify areas of sedi- ment and then developed a site-specific flushing and sampling programme to ensure that the water quality was improved. Following the flushing to remove discoloured water, quality samples were taken for analysis to ensure that the water supply met the very stringent quality standards. Additional technical training was provided to the port staff to enable them to carry out the flushing programme themselves in the future.
