washing line ADVERTORIAL ULTIMATE FLYGT SOLUTION FOR HEATHROW AIRPORT The Cargo Centre plays host to a huge volume of traf- fi c each day, and witnesses non-stop activity around the clock. When such operations are running so regularly, it is critical to ensure that sys- tems are being run in the most effi cient way possible. Following a joint effort of extensive investigations into the terminal's operational requirements, Heathrow's Water Services Department commissioned Xylem Water Solutions UK to install two of its Adaptive 'N' submers- ible sewage pumps and two SmartRun Intelligent Pump Controllers in the cargo area's sewage wet well, both from the Flygt Experior range. The installation was completed in January 2013, having been fully installed in less than a day – living up to the Flygt Experior promises of Reliability, Simplicity and Effi ciency. The pumps installed in the Cargo Centre loading area featured Flygt's patent- ed adaptive hydraulic tech- nology which incorporates a unique swept back impeller leading edge to offer sus- tained improved effi ciency over the pump station's lifes- pan. It works in conjunction with the guide pin and relief groove which are built into the pump. This means that should a very large solid present itself to the pump, the impeller will rise up the pump shaft to al- low the solid to pass before returning to its normal posi- tion. As a result, the number of soft blockages is signifi - cantly reduced, allowing for a more reliable and consist- ent performance, and fewer maintenance call outs. Be- ing one of the world's largest and busiest airports, Heath- row needed the most reli- able pumping system avail- able due to the high footfall of passengers going through the Terminals each day. The two SmartRun Intel- ligent Pump Controllers that accompanied the Flygt 'N' pumps enabled Heathrow's Water Services Department to immediately monitor the specifi c energy use – Spe- cifi c energy is defi ned as the energy required for the pump to pump a unit volume of fl uid in a specifi c system – of the pumps during their nor- mal pumping cycle. Flygt's SmartRun Intelligent Pump Controllers are capable of determining the minimum 'specifi c energy' required by a particular pump station through the use of its 'En- ergy Minimising Feature'. It works by reducing a pump's speed on every pump cycle until the minimum specifi c energy is found. The SmartRun Intelligent Pump Controllers then con- tinually adjusts the pump speed to ensure that the minimum specifi c energy available for that site is be- ing used for all pump cycles throughout the year allowing for seasonal changes dy- namically without the need for a site visit and recalibra- tion of the system. What's more, the Smart- Run Intelligent Pump Con- trollers come as standard with a number of other key wastewater features ensur- ing a problem free pumping solution. These algorithms include pump and pipe cleaning, sump cleaning, pump and drive protection, soft start and stop and external fi eld- bus communication. Following on from the installation, Heathrow has witnessed some impressive results. The pumps in the cargo holding area have set- tled into running at 33-37Hz. This has cut the energy con- sumption of the pump sta- tion by around 50 per cent. Additionally, the SmartRun Intelligent Pump Controllers have reduced maintenance call out incidents to zero, again resulting in a signifi cant amount of both time and mon- ey being saved, due to the panels cleansing and variable start level functions. Tony Price, Market Devel- opment Manager for Xylem Water Solutions UK, com- mented: "Heathrow Airport is globally renowned as a gateway for millions of people each year. To cater for the sys- tem demands associated with dealing with such a high vol- ume of traffi c, its pump facili- ties are constantly under pres- sure to deliver day in, day out. "Our aim was to provide Heathrow with a superior pumping system that would not only help reduce energy bills through eliminating any unnecessary energy con- sumption, but also provide a highly reliable solution which could decrease the number of maintenance calls required to Heathrow Airport is one of the world's busiest airports, with almost 70 million people travelling through its terminals in 2012 alone. The Cargo Centre at Heathrow handles the vast amount of freight that moves in and out of the airport and requires a sizable technical effort behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of proceedings in the public area. When the airport's Water Services Department were looking for ways to improve the overall effi ciency of the terminal's operations, Xylem Water Solutions UK was appointed to evaluate the requirements and develop an optimised energy saving wastewater pumping strategy. ADVERTORIAL ensure the smooth running of the pump system. We were able to quickly identify the key solutions and complete the installation with- in the Cargo Centre loading area in just under a day." Ian Jolly of Heathrow Air- port's Water Services Depart- ment was impressed with Xylem's product recommenda- tions and the resulting instal- lation. He added: "We approached Xylem Water Solutions UK as we have previously worked together and its most recent installation has certainly lived up to the company's previous high standards." "The adaptive hydraulics of the Flygt 'N' pumps and the SmartRun Intelligent Pump Controllers provided the pump system in the Cargo Centre with a sustained level of im- proved efficiency. As a result our running costs and maintenance call outs have noticeably de- creased, saving us significant amounts of system down- time and money through the cheaper bills. Overall, it was certainly a job well done." For more information on Flygt Expe- rior and other Flygt pumps and pump station controllers, please visit www.xylemwatersolutions.com/uk
