22 WET NEWS JUNE 2014 WHAT'S NEW! Overcoming 'water hammer' HWM-Water has developed a new data logger speci cally for monitoring the water network for damaging pressure transients and combatting 'water hammer'. With a ve-year battery life, fast Water quality analysis Kisters' WISKI measuring data management system now processes sampling data (metadata) and the accompanying physico-chemical water quality information along with the usual hydrological values. With the expansion of the KiWQM water quality module, the WISKI software is now a communal database for diŠ erent departments, providing a full picture of the state of the water and steering the data management processes. With the expansion of the measuring data management as regards the input, management and analysis of water quality data, WISKI has increased its eld of operation. A major plus is the correct assignment of the con dential Cooling tower plastic media Hewitech is oŠ ering one of the most comprehensive ranges available of plastic media for use in cooling data sampling and large memory, HWM's Pressure Transient logger is suitable for both long-term surveys and rapid trouble-shooting deployments. The new logger features an expanded 4GB of flash memory and uses advanced data compression algorithms to store up to eight billion readings on board. It can operate in the eld for weeks or even months while still sampling rapidly enough (25Hz) to eŠ ectively monitor for pressure transients. Conventional data loggers are unable to sample at a fast enough rate or store enough data to log and catch damaging pressure spikes, which may only last a fraction of a second. Despite - and in part because of - the speed and brevity of the event, these moments of extreme pressure diŠ erential are a major factor in reducing asset lifetime and causing burst water mains. www. hwm-water.com Tel: 01633 489 479 water quality information that includes the concentration of pollutants, amount of bacteria, oxygen content, conductivity or pH values to the continuously captured hydrologic and meteorological data; such as levels, flow velocity, rainfall or temperature. Quantitative and qualitative data from surface or groundwater can be assessed together and derived indicators, for example, loads can be calculated. Hydrologic values are continuously collected, while the chemical water quality parameters from the taken samples are only updated after analysis in the laboratory. Despite this time delay, the WISKI water quality module can allocate the hydrologic measuring value ndings of the test analysis to validate the data automatically and calculate the resulting correlations. www. kisters.de Tel: +49 (0)241-9671-217 towers. According to Juniper Systems, prior to the design of the Archer 2, customer research revealed that battery life was one of the top concerns among rugged handheld users. Customers submitted that they needed a battery that could run their handheld plus additional functions like GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi for a minimum of ten to 12 hours. This information initiated eŠ orts to select a battery for the Archer 2 that would provide the consider- able power and reliability that customers wanted. Archer 2's battery uses 'overtime technology' that provides longer runtime in cold temperatures using technology adapted from hybrid car batteries. The battery lasts long past the desired ten to 12 hour range, and even above 20 hours in some conditions, while still powering additional functions and connected accessories. In addition to 'the excellent runtime' the battery technology oŠ ers a longer lifespan and holds a full charge much longer than traditional batteries used in most rugged handhelds.¤ It also has superior quick-charge capability, which can be provided via a vehicle charger.¤ According to Juniper Systems, the battery can charge up to 70% capacity in as little as 45 minutes charge time. www. junipersys.com Tel: 01527 870773 Disinfection mixing Berson's new Amaline is a (LPHO) multi-lamp UV system that, despite its small size, packs a powerful punch, with the highest lamp power density of any similar-sized system. Also a new patent-pending hydraulics create a rotational liquid flow, ensuring extensive mixing of the fluid and optimal disinfection performance while minimising head-loss. Two versions are available – a U-shaped model for applications where higher UV doses are required (wastewater reuse or virus removal) and an L-shaped system for applications with lower UV dose requirements (drinking water disinfection). Berson has also launched BersonSense and Berson UV Connect. BersonSense is a transmittance monitor that uses UV-LED technology and provides accurate UV transmit- tance (UVT) readings in all conditions over an extended lifetime, ensuring proper UV dosing and e© cient operation. The Berson UV Connect is a wireless logging device allowing operators to remotely monitor the performance of their UV systems. www. bersonuv.com Tel: +31 (0)40 290 7777 Measuring culvert flows Liquid volumes and flow rates can be continuously monitored using sensitive yet rugged new sensors that have recently been added to the range of piping systems specialist George Fischer. The new Type 2270 Ultrasonic Blind Sensor and Type 2260 Ultrasonic Display Sensor have been designed to oŠ er both ease of installation and use, as well as a long low maintenance life, and will nd applications in the water, sewage treatment, chemical, manufacturing and processing industries. They are also suitable for measuring flows in culverts and spillways where flood monitoring is a priority. The sensors can calculate the dos- age of chemicals required to control the pH value of a flow, for the accurate lling of storage tanks and in specialist treatments such as electro-plating. The various sizes and outputs of the sensors operate on the 'time of flight' principle where a sound wave is transmitted from a point above the fluid surface and the time for the return signal to be received measured. This provides a reading of the level for the surface to an accuracy of +/- 0.2% of flow. www. george scher.co.uk Tel: 0247 653 5535 MCERTS for transmitter Endress+Hauser has achieved MCERTS certi cation for its CM44x analytical transmitter and associated CPS11D pH electrode. The award follows both laboratory testing and a eld test on the eŠ luent from a treatment works. The transmitter and electrode utilise the Memosens data transmis- sion technology seen across the major- ity of Endress+Hauser's analytical range. Now MCERTS installations can bene t from the technology that eliminates the problems of corrosion, leaks and measured value distortion from moisture. Memosens also makes maintenance far easier, reduces downtime and cuts the whole-life cost of the measurement. The CM44x is a multi-parameter, multi-channel device that is also utilised in Endress+Hauser's MCERTS-certi ed range of automatic and portable samplers. This provides commonality and ease of use across many applications working to MCERTS standards.
