10 LEADERS 2014 THE LEADERS 2014 AECOM 'excited' over totex AECOM Design Build has topped our Net Margin Top Ten table. The company is focused on its ambition to be market leader in the water sector. A ECOM's water business per- formance has been strong over the past year as it car- ried out asset management, consultancy design, deliv- ery contracting and a blend of all three. The business has been delivering "some exciting projects", such as working with United Utilities and GCA delivering the € rst multi-storey stacked CASS SBR plant in the UK at Liverpool's Sandon Dock. The company also further strength- ened its relationship with Thames Water through appointments on several major projects including two thermal hydroly- sis process plants in Kent and Oxford- shire and the major water treatment upgrade at Deephams Wastewater Treat- ment Works. It has also been successful as a mem- ber of Caledonia Water Alliance (with Net Margin AECOM Design Build 293 Dawnus 10 AMEY 7.7 Mott MacDonald 6.1 Peter Du• y 5.5 Stonbury 5.1 PN Daly 4.6 Skanska 4.1 Lewis Civil Engineering 4 "We are prepared for an in- creased need for renewable and refurbishment of assets to meet directives" Stuart Rothery Morrison Utility Services) in Scotland to in securing the water network alliance, where it will be leading with programme management services. Stuart Rothery, operations director of AECOM's design-build business, com- ments: "We are focused on our ambition to be a leader in the water market and have made signi€ cant steps towards this goal over recent months." He says the company has several projects ramping up over the next 12 months. In particular, Thames Water's " agship project to re-build the Deep- hams Sewage Works, one of the biggest projects in the UK water industry today. Strong programming From a performance perspective AECOM is looking to enhance its capabilities in order to deliver a continuously improved service. This will include its engineering and operational capabilities, alongside its continuing focus on health and safety. "We place great emphasis on using our technical know-how and high safety standards in conjunction with strong programming and commercial management expertise," says Rothery. While AECOM is keeping busy, Rothery says: "We see some framework activity gradually decreasing over the rest of the AMP5 period." He says AECOM— "is excited about totex" and the move towards outcomes in the new regulatory environment. "Establishing the correct balance between the capital expenditure and the operating costs for our clients is a fun- damentally new approach and presents many exciting opportunities for us. "We have recognised the importance of totex for a number of years, and have been analysing the carbon footprint of projects with our own in-house-devel- oped carbon-calculation tool from the start of AMP5." Rothery says the company is also a leader in Water Sensitive Design for urban environments and in catchment- based solutions that can have a real impact over the medium term on totex. However, it remains to be seen how bold the industry will be in embracing the opportunities for sustainability and e˜ - ciency through a broader understanding of how the water industry sits in the big- ger community, he adds. "As our delivery has always embraced totex, we continue to be focused on delivering a best-€ t process which suits clients' and partners' requirements, encompassing a holistic integrated approach to totex." Moving forward, Rothery says AECOM is well positioned to secure AECOM Design Build Wentworth Business Park, Tankersley, Barnsley. www.aecom.com %
