| 40 | Desalination & Water Reuse | May-June 2014 IDA & AFFILIATES IDA AcceptIng bIDs to stAge 2017 WorlD congress The International Desalination Association has been accepting formal bids to host its 2017 World Congress from 20 April 2014. Bidding for the biennial event will close on 20 September 2014. The 2015 event is scheduled for San Diego, USA, from 30 August to 4 September 2015. IDA sets criteria for consideration of congress destinations, as follows: l Interest in desalination and water reuse and their associated technologies, planned, under construction or in operation l Invitation and support of the local government and the relevant water/desalination authorities or associations l Letters of recommendation and support l Ability to meet IDA criteria and program requirements. More information on the 2017 site selection criteria and bid proposal requirements, can be obtained from Leslie Merrill at lmerrill@idadesal.org. IDA is also now accepting exhibit applications for the 2015 San Diego congress. The exhibition will be the largest and most expansive in IDA World Congress history with over 18,000 m 2 of space. The Exhibitor Prospectus and Floor Plan can be seen on the IDA website. lAtIn AmerIcAn AffIlIAte joIns InternAtIonAl DesAlInAtIon AssocIAtIon The Asociación Latinoamericana de Desalación y Reuse del Agua (ALADYR) has become the newest affiliate organization to join the International Desalination Association (IDA), bringing to 15 the number of regional and association IDA affiliates around the world. ALADYR was founded in November 2010 during the International Seminar on Desalination held in the city of Antifogasta, Chile. Its mission includes promoting, protecting and developing the engineering, construction, application and development of technologies, equipment and materials for desalination and water materials, as well as promoting knowledge- sharing, education, training and professional development of its members. ALADYR also organizes conferences and meetings. In November 2013, ALADYR organized, in conjunction with Acquacon, a seminar on Desalination and Water Reuse held in São Paolo, Brazil. The seminar covered such topics as reverse osmosis systems for both potable and industrial water, MBR systems for water reuse, and other discussion areas. Member companies attending included Degrémont, Acciona Agua, Genesys, Dow Water & Process Solutions, Energy Recovery Inc, Atacama Water & Technology Ltd and Hydro Quality, among others. Today, ALADYR has more than 70 members. Renato Giani Ramos has been named the ALADyR representative to the IDA board of directors. Currently vice president of ALADYR, Ramos is technical leader and marketing manager for Dow Water & Process Solutions in Latin America. Renato has more than 16 years of experience in the water market. next IDA AcADemy course set for sIngApore WAter Week The International Desalination Association has chosen Operational Aspects of Reverse Osmosis (RO)& Membrane Plants and Mega Projects to be the topics of the next two-day course for the IDA Desalination Academy. The course will be held on 31 May – 1 June 2014 at the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore prior to Singapore International Water Week (1-5 June). David H Paul, president of his own high-tech water treatment training and consulting firm, and Dr Boris Liberman, chief technology officer and vice president membrane technology for IDE Technologies Ltd, will lead the courses. David Paul's course on operational aspects will deal with the common problems that occur, and the effective ways to solve these. The information is based upon the instructor's 36 years of operating, managing, training and consulting experience at hundreds of plants. Boris Liberman's look at mega-size RO plants will discuss their design, including the Pressure Center in Ashkelon, Hadera and Soreq Plants, and the 16 in vertical membrane arrangement in Soreq plant. Full details can be found on the IDA website. AmerIcAn membrAne technology AssocIAtIon AmtA/AWWA 2015 membrAne conference AbstrActs InvIteD The American Membrane Technology Association (AMTA) and the American Water Works Association have issued a call for papers for their fourth joint Membrane Technology Conference to be held in Florida in 2015. Abstracts for the conference at Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel, Orlando, during 2-6 March 2015, must be received by 30 June 2014. The conference will explore the research, development, implementation, operation and maintenance of membrane facilities, provide information on how to treat impaired water supplies with membranes, show how membranes enhance water reliability and water quality, and reveal new directions in water treatment technologies and wastewater membrane bioreactor applications. Key areas include planning, management, regulations, design, operation, coastal and inland brackish water desalination, seawater desalination, membrane filtration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis, contaminant removal, membrane bioreactors and water reuse applications. Abstracts should be submitted to AMTA via eventassist@amtaorg.com. The association warns that the deadlines for submission have been selected closer to the event than in the past and that there will be no extensions.
