PAWRS PREVIEW 2014 The Plant & Waste Recycling Show (PAWRS) has been attracting the great and the good for decades. Liz Gyekye finds out what this year's exhibition has in store. ast time I was at the Plant & Waste Recycling Show it was raining and R&B star Rihanna had just released her hit single 'Umbrella'. Teenagers around Devon were singing the hit tune and literally waving their umbrellas in the air. But I remem- ber having a great time. I stereotypi- cally ate fish and chips and indulged in ice-cream. Above all, I remember attending an event that was not just informative but very social - an event that was fun! The waste and recycling sector is a fun one to be in and it is a good time to be involved in the industry at the moment. A new report from the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) states that if the European Union were to "adopt ambitious new poli- cies and targets for the prevention and recycling of waste as part of its upcom- ing Waste Targets Review" then up to 750,000 new roles could be created by 2025, and 800,000 by 2030. With reports like these it is no won- der that the waste and recycling sector is being heralded as one of the few growth sectors in the UK economy. In addition to this, annual conferences are the life-blood of any industry and for the waste sector conferences do not get any more important than the Plant & Waste Recycling Show, which cel- ebrates its 29th year in Paignton, Devon from 10-12 June. So what can visitors expect to see in the exhibitor section? Here is a small taster of what is to come, with more detailed products and information on the following pages. Refuse collection vehicles giant Geesinknorba will be showing its N3 frontline RCV, widely used for both trade and domestic collections. According to the company, this product will be fitted with an "outstanding L200 trade lift". It will be also demonstrating it S500 bin lift which works as a trade lift or a fully automated spilt-lift. For those looking to view axle weighing systems, Vehicle Weighing Solutions will be back at PAWRS to demonstrate their products. The company will also be presenting its Enviroweigh bin-weighing system. With Collett Transport Services (CTS) now operating as the short term vehicle hire and maintenance division for Specialist Fleet Services (SFS) the companies will be sharing a stand at this year's show. A member of the Rothschild Group, SFS has over 20 years experience in contract hire, fleet management and workshop manage- ment. CTS will be showcasing a vehicle from its hire fleet. Optimised Waste Logistics (OWL) will also be exhibiting at this year's summer event. OWL is a waste man- agement partnership between CMS SupaTrak, MOBA (see next page 22) and Vision Techniques. All of the firms will be showcasing their newest waste sector products and services. German waste management technol- ogy provider c-trace will also be dem- onstrating a range of its products and services that cover waste collection from 'bin to bill', including telematic products and billing software. Speaking about trends in the sector, c-trace UK sales director Ian Martin says: "Last year we gained a firm foothold in the UK among both public and private sec- tor operators. In 2014, the market place is perfectly placed for us to expand as all operators are looking to improve their efficiency or find a competitive edge in waste management." The organisers of PAWRS will also be launching its 'Arrive & Drive' feature taking place next to the free visitor car park. The Arrive & Drive will give visi- tors to PAWRS a unique opportunity to test drive a wide range of vehicles, machinery and software with no com- mitment. This rare demonstration from a qualified engineer will give you a great insight to the machines capabilities and to see the vehicle and technology in action, according to the show's organis- ers. A spokeswoman says: "This will give visitors the confidence to invest in today's vehicles and machinery allow- ing any new customers to make the right decision." Let's hope there is no need for umbrellas and it's sunny when you get there.
