April 2014 WET NEWS 19 Dealing with ageing culverts beneath highways, which can be prob- lematic if they are not replaced or refurbished in a timely manner. The challenge: Tackling ageing culverts The liner end-stop through which the UV light train is controlled and the liner inflated for curing E very day thousands of kilometres of roads are blocked by road works, and trenchless technology has provided a welcome solution, as it involves the installation, replacement or renewal of un- derground utilities with mini- mum excavation and surface disruption. Trenchless technologies are and have been used success- fully for all underground utili- ties from, water, sewer, gas, and industrial pipelines to electrical conduit and fibre optics. The technologies are partic- ularly attractive construction options in urban areas with heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic and numerous existing underground utilities. Trenchless is an attractive option for crossing roadways, and other transportation corri- dors, and rivers and waterways. The technology can also can be used to install, rehabilitate or replace utilities located in environmentally sensitive areas and locations where sur- face access may be restricted due to the existence of struc- tures or vegetation. O•en, trenchless tech- niques are the only viable con- struction option, and the techniques are also o•en the least costly option as well as the least disruptive. Another area where trench- less technology is overtaking more traditional methods, is in dealing with ageing culverts beneath highways. These can be problematic in particular, especially if they are not replaced or refurbished in a timely manner. To ensure continued operation of its trunk routes the UK's Highways Agency is under- taking an on-going programme of work to ensure that culverts running beneath its roadways continue to operate effectively and efficiently. n "The technologies are particularly attractive construction options in urban areas " THE CONCEPT • Glass Reinforced Plastic Ultra Violet (GRP UV) cured pipe lining systems offer liners that are 40% thinner and three times stronger than conventional liners • The UV light source comprised six 2,000 watt UV bulbs • The liner was precisely manufactured and factory impregnated with the UV sensitive resin to fit the lining run MOANS & GROANS • Having to contact a land agent because the downstream section of the culvert ended in a farmer's field with the farmer having to be informed of the works • Motorists delayed by roadworks can be sometimes be abusive • Dealing with culverts under highways • INSIGHT Trenchless technology THE VERDICT • UV system's speed of operation was a major advantage on the scheme. • The project did not cause any disruption to the public or traffic • The risk of pollution was eliminated • A quality job completed to a high standard The Bodmin A30 trunk route work site SHARE YOUR OPINION... yoursaywn@fav-house.com
