12 WET NEWS APRIL 2014 Northumbrian Water has placed a third order with Atlas Copco to replace the remaining two lobe units installed at Newton Aycliffe with a further two ZS 90 screw blowers TECHKNOW • The ZS unit was compared with other blowers during similar weather, flow and biological load conditions • The screw blower consumes only 43kW (58hp) • Pulsation-free air at pressures of about 480mbar is delivered at an output rate of more than 4,000m 3 /hr • No lubrication is required in the compression space and specially designed seals prevent any rotor bearing oil from entering the compression chamber • The ZS unit was com- pared with other blowers THE VERDICT • Northumbrian Water is 'very pleased' with the 20% improvement we have already seen • The company has placed a third order with Atlas Copco to replace the remaining two lobe units installed at Newton Aycliffe WwTW with a further two ZS 90 screw blowers • The Atlas Copco ZS blowers have performed well ONSITE Energy efficiency housing and oil-free, pulsation- free air at pressures of about 480mbar is delivered at an out- put rate of more than 4,000m 3 /hr dependent upon process demand. Maintenance costs Energy savings are derived from the efficiency of the internal compression screw design and the direct drive, integrated gear- box that ensures fewer losses compared to the traditional belt and pulley system. For example, to deliver a flow of 1,600m³/hr at a pressure of 0.8bar (e) (11.6psig), a tri- lobe blower consumes 61kW (82hp) on average. By compari- son, the screw blower consumes only 43kW (58hp) to match this performance. At the same time reliability has been improved and mainte- nance costs reduced. Northumbrian Water has now placed a third order with Atlas Copco to replace the remaining two lobe units installed at Newton Aycliffe Waste Water Treatment Plant with a further two ZS 90 screw blowers. Alan Harle, the Northum- brian Water engineer who con- ducted the comparison tests, comments: "From an opera- tional perspective, Atlas Cop- co's ZS blowers have performed well, especially when compared with the incumbent blowers, and we are very pleased with the 20% improvement we have already seen. "I would say that the proof is in the pudding and given that NWL have chosen to replace all blowers with the Atlas Copco units speaks volumes." n The blower unit is based on a simple internal principle: precision timing gears maintain minute clearances between two intermeshing dry screw elements that never touch Intake air is compressed between the rotors and their housing and oil-free, pulsation-free air at pressures of about 480mbar SHARE YOUR OPINION... yoursaywn@fav-house.com Contact the sales team on Tel: 0161 231 9140 Go to our website to download the new FittoSize brochure. info@hambakerpipelines.co.uk | www.hambakerpipelines.co.uk The perfect * coupling and so much more... n A significant engineering solution n Competitively priced compared to market alternatives n Unique gasket compound designed to withstand vibration, impact, flexing, temperature differences and pressure n No special training required to fit plus minimal time preparation n Eradicates the need for electrofusion joints or the use of thrust blocks – major time and money savings. Excellent in all respects.} THE REMEDY FOR DIGESTION PROBLEMS… If you're existing gas and agitator mixing system is causing problems in your digesters, it could be time to do something different. After all, why expect different results if you are doing the same thing over and over again? Deposition in Digesters doesn't happen overnight, it creeps up until: • Gas production is compromised by lack of available capacity. • Septicity occurs due to lack of mobility. The result - Downtime, decommissioning the digester, emptying large amounts of material and ultimately zero production and high contractor costs. • Downstream equipment becomes unreliable due to excessive grit & fibrous material. Take a look at Rotamix – a refreshingly different approach Rotamix Features • Bespoke design to suit application • 10 year nozzle warranty • Drop-in system for active tank installation • No internal moving parts • Foam suppression system option • On-going technical support for your process Rotamix Benefits • Retained digester volume • Maximised solids reduction • Increased gas production • Minimal cleanout costs • Simple installation and low maintenance costs System Mix Ltd.
