THERE IS NOTHING IN THE AIR TONIGHT. From power generation and cement production to waste treatment and the distribution of natural gas – the more complex a plant, the greater the demands on systems engineering and services. With complete solutions for gas analysis, dust measurement, and fl ow measurement that are perfectly tailored for each process environment. With superior equipment availability, easy operation, certifi ed explosion protection, and robust measurement technology with long maintenance cycles. When it comes to fi nding a clean solution, the whole world takes measurements with SICK. We think that's intelligent. www.sick.co.uk SICK_210x297_Prozessautomation_PA_UK.indd 1 06/01/2014 15:54:54 STA ifc.indd 102 05/02/2014 19:40 Contents 04 The new flue gas flow rate standard EN ISO 16911 08 Getting it right: what you need to know to select the right contractor 13 STA has training covered 14 Proficiency testing – the benefits 16 Standards and methods for environmental monitoring in the UK 22 STA members A-Z listing 29 Emissions testing 30 Analytical laboratories 31 Equipment suppliers: source monitoring 32 Equipment suppliers: ambient monitoring 33 Specialist services 34 Ambient monitoring services 34 Training 3 Annual Guide 2014 | Source TeSTing ASSociATion FRONT COVER STACK PICTURE The main picture on the front cover show Stack at TATA STEEL, Scunthorpe winner of the STA Golden Stack Award. It has been my privilege to be chairman of the STA for the past two years. I will be passing the baton over to David Graham of E.ON in the spring. During the 10 years or so that I have been involved, the chairman has come, like myself, from an organisation who provides stack testing services. e choice of David is a good one, not only because he is an excellent candidate in his own right but also because he comes from the process opera- tor sector. is sector provides the largest number of members of the STA and it is appropriate that this is acknowledged in this way. e organisation was initiated by stack testers but over the years it has evolved into one with benefits for anyone with an interest in stack testing. is can be seen by the current breakdown of members: Process Operators 67 Other Test Houses 20 Other 7 Equipment Suppliers 35 Overseas 10 Laboratories 3 MCERTS Test Houses 28 Consultants 7 Regulators 3 Please consider becoming a member. e more members we have the more services we can offer. e benefits, in my opinion, far outweigh the cost of membership. In no particular order here are some of them. Free telephone advice on anything to do with monitoring of emissions to air. If we don't have the answer then we certainly will know someone who does. Training at discounted rates for members. Only two or three days of training saves enough to cover the cost of annual membership. Areas covered include what you need to know to pass stack testing MCERTS exams and for operators Regulatory Monitoring Requirements, On Site auditing and BS EN14181 Quality Assur- ance of an AMS. Keeping up to date – attend the meetings which cover a wide range of topics. ere will be something of interest for every member. Representatives of the Environment Agency and UKAS attend some of these meetings. e minutes of these meetings are available for members from the website. Notifications of new or updated documents such as Environment Agency documents or Standards are sent out by email. Getting involved with standards as they are being written or reviewed. Any member has the chance to influ- ence the content of standards. Similarly e Environment Agency often gives an opportunity to comment on their technical documents before they are published. e STA is an organisation run for the benefit of its membership. However despite the excellent work of Dave Curtis and his team it is heavily reliant on the membership to allow their employees to spend time on STA business. I would like to thank all those individ- uals whose efforts make the STA a continuing success. Some of their excellent work can be seen in the articles in this guide. Following the success of the Air Quality and Emissions Show 2013 this year sees the first regional AQE event at Redcar Racecourse in June. It can be difficult to spend a day or two to attend the main show in Telford. is is an attempt to reach to those of you in this position. Details are available on the STA website www.s-t-a.org. If this one is a success then more will follow.
