Source TeSTing ASSociATion | Annual Guide 2014 16 Standards and methods for environmental monitoring in the UK Selection of standards for emissions monitoring E ach year in the Annual Guide we highlight what has taken place in the world of standards development. 2013 was a very busy year with many new work items proposed in CEN and ISO; also publi cation of new standards. Standard reference methods are essential for the effective mea surement and control of air pollution. Such standards are developed at National, European and worldwide level. e robust ness and fitness for purpose of these standards is a function of the accumulated expertise and experience of the people who work to gether in committee to produce them. Where internationallyderived standards are binding on the UK, as European (CEN) standards are, it is particularly important that they should recognise UK interests and sensi tivities. BSI manages the UK input to new standards via its technical committees and the UK experts that they nominate to CEN and ISO working groups. CEN standards are mandatory and must be adopted by member states of the European Union. If a conflicting standard is in exist ence then this must be withdrawn. ISO standards are accepted on a caseby case principle, it is not mandatory for a member country to adopt a standard. BSI technical committee EH/2 is respon sible for air quality issues. e subgroup EH/2/1 is specifically charged with station ary source emissions measurement standard isation. BSI EH2/1 nominates experts to the technical committees of CEN/TC 264 (Air Quality) and ISO TC 146 (Air Quality). BSI EH2/1 also oversees a portfolio of existing BSI, CEN and ISO standards to ensure that they are regularly reviewed for technical relevance and continued suitability for pur pose. In order that existing and developing standards reflect the full range of UK inter ests, it is imperative that BSI EH2/1, like other BSI committees, reflects the widest possible range of users. Standards that are currently under devel opment by CEN and ISO are listed in the following tables. CEN TC 264 working groups WG 08 EN 13211 Measurement of total mercury emissions Working group has been reactivated to revise the existing documents but also develop a new standard on semi continuous measurement of mercury. Andy Curtis (Convenor), Lesley Sloss, Warren Corns, David Graham WG 04 Total gaseous organic carbon (emissions) EN12619 in publication process. EN13649 revised draft to convert to technical specification has been submitted. Dave Curtis (Convenor), Ray Pullen, Rupert Standring, Rick Gould, John Black, Liz Wolfenden WG 05 EN 13284 -Total dust at low concentrations (emissions) Working group has been reactivated to revise the exiting documents.
