22 | 21st - 27th February 2014 | utILIty WeeK High viz Operations & Assets The tunnel-boring machine digging a 6km-long giant sewer under east London has reached its destination. Thames Water's machine "Busy Lizzie" has been burrowing its way from Beckton to Abbey Mills since February 2012. It reached the end of tunnelling on 26 January aer cutting through an average of 17m a day of chalk, flint 75m below ground. When fully commissioned at the end of 2015, the tunnel will help pre- vent millions of tonnes of raw sewage entering the River Lee every year when heavy rainfall overloads London's Victorian sewers.
