The tunnel-boring machine digging
a 6km-long giant sewer under east
London has reached its destination.
Thames Water's machine "Busy
Lizzie" has been burrowing its way
from Beckton to Abbey Mills since
February 2012. It reached the end of
tunnelling on 26 January aer cutting
through an average of 17m a day of
chalk, flint 75m below ground.
When fully commissioned at the
end of 2015, the tunnel will help pre-
vent millions of tonnes of raw sewage
entering the River Lee every year when
heavy rainfall overloads London's
Victorian sewers.
