IDA | 46 | Desalination & Water Reuse | February-March 2014 EDR researcher wins 2013 Channabasappa Scholarship The International Desalination Association has awarded its 2013 Channabasappa Scholarship to Leila Karimi, a PhD candidate at the Institute for Energy & the Environment, Chemical Engineering Department, New Mexico State University (NMSU). The objective of this annual IDA Scholarship is to encourage engineers and scientists to further their education in subjects related to desalination and water reuse. The scholarship provides financial assistance to graduate students who have been accepted into a graduate program of doctoral studies and who intend to pursue a desalination and water reuse related research thesis. The total maximum grant per student is US$ 10,000/calendar year. Born in Iran, Karimi graduated as the outstanding student of secondary studies in 2000 and pre-university studies in 2001, and then was accepted to attend Sahand University of Technology in Tabriz, where she earned a BSc in Chemical Engineering in 2005 and a MSc in 2009. In 2011, Karimi began her research as a member of the team at NMSU. Her focus is on the selective removal of ions in an electrodialysis reversal process as one of the inland desalination technologies that is appropriate for brackish groundwater. She has mentoring and teaching experience in addition to her research in the laboratory and has made several presentations at conferences, especially on brackish water desalination, and has been published in Water & Wastes Digest magazine. Staged at University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome Faculty of Engineering, the course will be led by Dr Mark Wilf, who has been involved in process development, system de sign, project execution, plant operation and maintenance of large, commercial desalination plants in US, Europe and Middle East since 1977. The five other events will include two preconference workshops at the EDS international conference in Limassol, Cyprus, on Desalination For The Environment in May. The five are: • 24–27 March 2014, Italy. Ion-Exchange Membranes Processes: The Principle and Practical Applications. Lecturer: Prof Heiner Strathmann • 31 March–3 April 2014, Italy. Pretreatment, Membrane Fouling and Scaling. Lecturer: Prof Jan Schippers • 10–11 May 2014, Grand Resort Hotel, Limassol, Cyprus. Water Treatment for Hydraulic Fracturing. Lecturer: John Walsh • 10 May 2014, Grand Resort Hotel, Limassol,Cyprus. How to Correct the Biggest BWRO and SWRO Problems. Lecturer: David H Paul • 11–13 June 2014, Almeria, Spain. Desalination with Solar Energy. Lecturers: Julián Blanco, Diego-César Alarcón- Padilla, Guillermo Zaragoza Information on all these courses can be found on the EDS website. www.edsoc.com Leila Karimi Hosted & oRGANIsed by AssocIAtIoN PARtNeR PRINcIPAl sPoNsoR AustrAliA's iNtErNAtiONAl WAtEr CONFErENCE & EXHiBitiON GAlA dINNeR DIVERSIFY YOUR WATER KNOWLEDGE FOSTER bUSINESS RELATIONShIpS DRIVE NEW SOLUTIONS www.ozwater.org RegisteR NOW 3 Network with the who's who in water from Australia and around the world. 3 Hear from influential speakers including the chair of the National Water commission and the President of the World Water council. 3 discuss and debate key water issues. 3 Participate in tailored business matching. 3 learn about innovative products and services in the always impressive trade exhibition.
