THE US Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) selected a Black & Veatch- led team to manage the construction of more than US$500M (£302M) in future tunnel projects. The tunnels are a significant part of the MSD's Project Clear, a long- term, multibillion dollar effort to address sewer overflows and basement backups throughout St. Louis. Marie Collins, assistant director of Engineering for Construction Management, said: "Black & Veatch brings resources and experience from tunnelling projects around the world, as well as in the Midwest, that are designed to reduce combined sewer overflows." Black & Veatch is responsible for construction management of up to seven different tunnels across MSD's service territory. These tunnels will range from nine feet in diameter to more than 20 feet. The longest tunnel will be nearly seven miles long. "Black & Veatch has a proven approach and successful track record regarding construction management of rock tunnels, particularly ones in karst formations such as the tunnels in progress for MSD," said David Egger, senior vice president in Black & Veatch's water business. "Deep tunnels provide a long-term solution for combined sewer overflows and sanitary sewer overflows in a manner that preserves community aesthetics and property values. Although each present major engineering and construction challenges, Black & Veatch has been successful at mitigating risks for our clients and keeping projects on schedule." Black & Veatch goes tunnelling Severn Trent picks NMCNomenca as AMP6 D&B partner NMCNOMENCA is to help deliver Severn Trent Water's next phase of upgrade and improvement works as part of a £400-£500M contract. The company will be the AMP6 de- sign and build (D&B) partner for Severn Trent Water across both clean water and waste- water frameworks. This is a continuation of the work NMC Nomenca has already completed for Severn Trent Water under the AMP5 framework, which has included work at Stoke Bardolph water treatment works in Nottingham. As part of the new deal, work will take place on a number of projects across the Midlands with a concentration of activity in the south and east regions. NMCNomenca will carry out infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects, including work on water treatment plants, sewer lines, storage facilities, flood alleviation, sewer upgrades, combined sewer overflows, storm water and wastewater management. Stuart Proud, managing director at NMC Nomenca, said: "We're delighted to be able to continue our work with Severn Trent Water who we have built a very successful relationship with over the past five years. Our work on AMP5 has allowed us to develop new technologies, innovations and skills that we will be able to apply to this new framework to deliver projects on time and on budget." Simon Cocks, Waste Water Services director for Severn Trent Water, said: "We've developed successful long- term relationships with all of our supply chain partners and we're pleased that we can continue to work together as one team to maximise the benefits of these arrangements. "The vision for the next five years is all about investing efficiently so that we continue to deliver the lowest bills in England and Wales for our customers and leave a legacy to be proud of." 4 | WET News | February 2014 www.teekaycouplings.com tel: +44 (0)1494 679500 | CONTRACT NEWS Suprafilt helps with upgrade Qatar penstock deal for Ham Baker Adams Shoreline strategy deal awarded AERATION specialist Suprafilt has extended its successful working relationship with civil engineer JN Bentley by securing a further major contract for Severn Trent Water's sewage treatment works at Market Drayton. Rochdale-based Suprafilt, which specialises in fine bubble diffused aeration systems Suprafilt, will be upgrading an existing three- tank oxidation ditch as part of the capital maintenance scheme needed to sustain capacity at the works. The contract, for an undisclosed amount and due to be finished in August, will involve the replacement of existing flow inducers with new 9" PTFE membrane- coated disc diffusers (designed to reduce fouling), air diffusers and pipework. Suprafilt sales director Graeme Fielden is delighted to be continuing to work with the Skipton-based firm. "This is another significant contract win for us and another opportunity to build on an excellent working relationship with JN Bentley. "The project will also see us installing energy-efficient flow inducers manufactured by Wilo as part of a preferred partner agreement which is continuing to grow and which allows us to combine expertise and resources to provide the best complete solution packages." A spokesperson for JN Bentley said: "For this scheme it was essential to find a solution which fulfilled its purpose, achieved phased programme requirements and delivered cost efficiency to meet the expectations of JN Bentley and the client. "Suprafilt were able to offer this solution. Their willingness to assist, prior to contract award, with design and scope options, including the carrying out of CFD modelling, was helpful in determining the most appropriate design solution." HAM BAKER Adams, part of FJ Holdings, has won a new contract to design, manufacture, supply and supervise the installation of high-head special stainless steel penstocks in Doha, Qatar. The 18m on-and-off- seating penstocks, including two sized at 2.5m 2 and 3.0m 2 , are to be installed in stormwater pumping stations for the Lusail Expressway in Doha, due to be completed in 2016. The project is a key component of Qatar's overall Expressway Programme, which with 900km of new roads is one of the most important infrastructure projects for the country's public works authority, Ashghal. Despite strong competition, Ham Baker Adams secured the coveted contract because it was able to fully comply with the exacting specification and site requirements. The UK company also has "an excellent track record" for supplying similar heavy duty penstocks in the region, including Wathba in Abu Dhabi and Ras Az Zawr in Saudi Arabia. Set to provide a vital connection into Katara, Lusail City, the future Doha Bay crossing and the 4Mm 2 man- made island, Pearl-Qatar, the 5.3 km, four-lane Lusail Expressway will also cater for future light rail transit (LRT) and Metro's Red Line North. Iconic superstructures at key locations along the route will complete the striking look of this world class road network, making it a true landmark in the region. The company will help deliver a range of schemes in the Southend-on-Sea shoreline strategy The penstocks will be used in Doha's stormwater pumping stations MOTT MACDONALD has been appointed on a five-year con- tract to provide consultancy services for coastal defence projects within the South- end-on-Sea Borough Council area. The consultancy will also assist the council in delivering a range of schemes identified in the Southend-on-Sea shore- line strategy. Peter Phipps, Mott Mac- Donald's project director, said: "We have already un- dertaken the initial appraisal of coastal defence assets and will be conducting further condition assessments early next year after the winter storm period." Mott MacDonald's con- tract will run until August 2018, with the option of a further two-year extension.
