First up is Water NI 2014, which takes place on 27 February. Now in its fifth year, this popular event brings NI Water's new acting chief executive, Sara Venning, and Irish Water's new managing director, John Tierney, to its stage for the first time. Following the sell-out success of the 2013 event, Water NI 2014 (www.wwt-ni.net) is strategically timed ahead of the PC15 investment period. This third price control for NI Water will cover a longer six-year period from 2015-16 to 2020-21 and while closing the efficiency and performance gap between NI Water and comparator UK companies remains a dominant issue, PC15 is also expected to address longer-term sustainability issues. Water Ireland John Tierney will also address delegates at Water Ireland 2014 (www.wwt-ireland.net) in Ashbourne, near Dublin, on 27 March, along with keynote speaker Phil Hogan TD, Minister for Environment. The Republic is at a very interesting point in its water reform strategy as it moves away from a model where households are not fiscally responsible for their water towards one intended to attract the investment its water resources need. Great challenges await the newly-formed public utility, Irish Water, which is tasked with consolidating the water and wastewater services currently provided by 34 local authorities. Writing in the Irish Times, Haslett said the problem with being a water utility in Ireland is the constant comparison "with the more efficient" English, Welsh and Scottish water companies. "Economic regulators enjoy making these comparisons, even though the comparator group have been at it over 22 years and importantly, they are mostly in the private sector – they enjoy governance models that provide flexibility in making quick business decisions, and don't suffer from competing priorities for funding in the public sector," he said.
