level PART OF: www.iwex.co.uk @Suslive linkedin.com/SusLive facebook.com/Sustainabilitylive THE LEADING EVENT FOR WATER & WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT requirements set by the National Grid. Before being injected into the National Grid, the gas must achieve the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations, GS(M)R, 1996 standards. The high pressure biomethane gas passes through a series of specialised gas measurement instruments, which continuously monitor and log the gas constituents including methane, Hydrogen, Oxygen, dew point, calorific value (CV), and other paramaters. In order to ensure that the biomethane has the same CV as natural gas within the pipeline, its CV is adjusted to that of natural gas by the injection of propane before it is injected into the high pressure National Grid pipeline. In addition, an odorant is added to the biomethane for improved safety. Final injection of the biomethane into the grid is controlled by a remotely operated valve (ROV). The ROV can shut by National Grid, if the specification of the biogas falls outside of the agreed gas composition specification. The process water used as the scrubbing liquor in the upgrade plant is depressurised and regenerated through an air stripping column before being recycled back to the high pressure water scrubbing process for reuse. The contaminated air from the stripping column is treated through an odour control unit to prevent possible odour nuisance, before being released to atmosphere. This £6.3M project will be completed and put into service in Autumn 2014, before further performance testing and final completion in 2015. When this project is complete, it will highlight the benefits of bio-methane injection to grid and be one of the largest commercial Biomethane Gas-to-Grid plant in the UK. ■ David O'Malley is technical manager at Imtech Water, Waste and Energy.
