INDUSTRY NEWS Don't get fooled – book now for industry awards The Awards night offers great networking opportunities The Water Industry Achievement Awards (WIAA) may be taking place on April Fools Day in 2014, but that is no reason to think the night will be anything other than a celebration of the best. The entries for this prestigious event are in, judging is underway, and booking for the awards dinner is now open. The WIAAs are hosted by sister titles WWT and WET News and celebrate innovation, collaboration and best practice in the water industry. The organisers urge anyone who has not yet booked to do so quickly as the earlybird rate ends on 14 February 2014. The Awards night, which takes place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, is one of the most prestigious in the water industry calendar. This year, it is co-located with IWEX Water Live, which is held at the Birmingham NEC from 1-3 April, making it a perfect networking opportunity for visitors and exhibitors alike. Sponsors include Ofwat, Asset International, Imtech, TES, Nomenca, Concrete Pipeline Systems Association, PAM Saint Gobain, Doosan, Sykes Pumps and Sulzer. • Book your place at WWTonline.co.uk Planning sought for £100M Cheddar reservoir Bristol Water has submitted a planning application to Sedgemoor District Council for a proposed £100M project to build a second reservoir in Cheddar, Somerset. The utility says the reservoir, which is planned to be built alongside the existing one, is needed to meet future demand for water. A decision on the planning application is expected in the spring. Bristol Water said the proposed reservoir offers the most cost- effective solution that is deliverable in terms of environmental and geological considerations. The company revised its plans for the reservoir following a second public consultation in late summer. The changes included moving the site slightly south-east, following concerns it was too close to the existing reservoir. The company has also produced a flythrough of the proposed reservoir, which can be viewed at WWTonline.co.uk. Scottish company takes tech wizardry to Oz Software developed by a company headquartered in the Scottish Highlands has been used by an Australian utility to predict water demand, treatment plant production and resource movement in different geographical zones. South Australia Water (SAW) used C3 Group's Amulet Predictive Analytics across Adelaide's metropolitan water distribution network. SAW senior project manager Steve McMichael said, "SA Water had recently completed a large project to interconnect Adelaide's water supply system in order to provide greater flexibility and wwtonline.co.uk security of supply during drought or in the case of system failure. After a thorough search, C3's Amulet was chosen to provide data collection, analysis and reporting tools." C3 Global says the 12th generation of its web-based Amulet platform "allows businesses to see into the future". Chief executive David Smith said, "Amulet Predictive Analytics complements other software to extract data from operational processes, quickly analyse it and feed it back into the process to improve outcomes. By doing this it gives people insight to solve realworld problems." "A new look for WWT is an incredibly exciting development..." WWT is changing. We gave selected readers a sneak preview of the new magazine and asked what they thought. Piers Clark, Commercial Director of Thames Water commented: "A new look for WWT is an incredibly exciting development. This publication has always been an invaluable source of industry knowledge and news but with the addition of features like Getting to Grips it will provide a unique and hugely helpful guide to water professionals, irrespective of their length of service in the sector."
