WATER TREATMENT Chlorine monitor roll-out delivers major cost savings A framework won by Analytical Technology (AT) to roll out chlorine monitors to 52 Yorkshire Water treatment plants and nine secondary chlorination sites has been completed. AT's general manager for Europe, Mike Strahand, reveals what was involved I n July 2011, Analytical Technology (AT) was awarded a framework agreement to supply and install 450 chlorine monitors to Yorkshire Water (YW) as part of a new bufferless chlorine monitoring system – the first complete company-wide asset replacement programme of its kind. The utility decided to replace their outdated and inefficient buffered amperometric systems, which they had previously cost around £250K a year on in reagents alone. YW made a requirement of supply that, wherever possible, the new system be free from the use of chemical buffering, traditionally associated with such measurements. The utility's view is that acetate and phosphate buffers are expensive, present health and safety issues and are environmentally unfriendly. Buffer delivery systems are also maintenanceintensive and reagents are costly. By avoiding the use of reagents wherever possible, YW sites could achieve huge operating cost savings and reduce their environmental impact. The company identified measurement accuracy, reliability and cost-effectiveness as the principle benefits it wanted to achieve from a new framework. With these requirements in mind, the research and development team ran an extensive trial, testing 24 analysers from 12 different manufactures on several water treatment works (WTW) against the company's existing analysers. The results demonstrated that AT's Q46H Residual Chlorine Monitor offered the most accurate, efficient, reliable and cost effective system, AT was therefore awarded the framework. Evaluation Following the initial extensive trial there was a further evaluation period of nine months to assess the most appropriate solutions for the varying water types. AT's bufferless chlorine monitors were tested using a wide variety of water types at four WTWs in Elvington, Embsay, Keldgate and Langsett. The trial established that the monitor's membranes would not need replacing for at least six months in most applications, and in u 20 Mega_Link 1970's 10R 1980's 30R At each stage of our product evolution we: 1990's 20R 2000's Data_Link A History of Churchill Controls' Telemetry Development 2014 Mega_Link Listen to our customers Encompass latest technology Design Innovate Evolution through Intelligent Design Contact us now for anything you need to know about telemetry: Licence-free Radio, GPRS, Leased Line and to receive a copy of our new Mega_Link product brochure Churchill Controls Ltd 30 Wellington Business Park, Crowthorne, Berkshire, RG45 6LS Tel: 01344 750233 e-mail Mega_Link@churchill-controls.co.uk wwtonline.co.uk tel: +44 (0)1494 679500 www.teekaycouplings.com January 2014 Water & Wastewater Treatment 19
