MUNICIPAL VEHICLES Municipal vehicality How is the municipal vehicle sector finding business? What are their thoughts on the year ahead? Liz Gyekye reports on trends that will shape your industry in 2014. • Geesinknorba Geesinknorba manufacturers, supplies and provides aftersales support and service for a complete range of refuse collection vehicles (RCV's) and compactors. UK business director Bob Billington predicts that 2014 will be a tough year for the Geesinknorba Hybrid 2 Amsterdam rear-angle loading RCV market. "2014 will remain tough and competitiveness will be key," he explains. "However, there is a genuine opportunity to 'add value' to sales through innovation and flexible business Geesinknorba GPMIII practices and this is what we will be focusing on. We also have the introduction of 'Whole Vehicle Type Approval' (WVTA) legislation for all RCV's in 2014 which presents a challenge and will increase costs. This applies to all RCV manufacturers." What are the new trends that you are seeing and where do you see growth in the sector in the next five years? Geesinknorba feels that there will be new trends and growth in areas dedicated to food waste collections, 'single pass' mixed recyclable and waste collections, the implementation of electric/hybrid technology and the increased use of vehicle telemertry systems for operational management. Billington says that this is related to changes in the waste stream. He says that municipal food waste collections are on the increase and alternate weekly collections of municipal residual waste and recyclables. He adds: "As the recycling rate increases and the type of recyclables collected changes, the mass balance and tonnage of different materials and waste requiring collections will change. This means collection vehicle specifications will be subject to constant change and, consequently, it will be the most innovative and forward thinking manufacturers that will be the most successful in grabbing market share." What is your top-selling model and why? The company's top selling model is the frontline GPM III 26T standard RCV. This is the specification most of its customers go for whether collecting residual waste or recyclable streams. • Faun Zoeller Faun Zoeller is a supplier and service provider of refuse c o l l e c ti o n and recycling vehicle, wheeled-bin lifters and road sweeping vehicles to the municipal and private sectors. The company Faun Zoeller Viajet acknowledged that 2013 was a difficult year. However, it also says that it has been working closely with both sectors to help "them achieve, within tight budgets, replacement and refurbishment programmes". The company predicts that 2014 will continue to be challenging for all manufacturers. Faun Zoeller Rotary Three It states that the introduction of 'Euro 5' legislation will definitely have an effect on the replacement of new vehicles with delivery times affected and limited availability of model ranges. Euro 5 is European legislation which aims to reduce pollution by exhaust emissions from on-road truck and bus diesel engines. January 2014 Local Authority Waste & Recycling 17
