IDA EuropEAn DEsAlInAtIon socIEty EDs holding membrane training week in l'Aquila The European Desalination Society is holding a membrane training week in L'Aquila, Italy, on 30 September – 4 October 2013 presenting two back-to-back seminars by David Paul. The seminars are Operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of nanofiltration (NF)/reverse-osmosis (RO) systems (days 1-3) and Optimal design and operation of RO systems (days 4-5). David Paul is president of David H Paul Inc an advanced water treatment training and consulting company based in the US. His company has trained over 16,000 water treatment professionals since 1988. The venue for the seminars will be the Canadian Hotel in L'Aquila, the capital of the Abruzzo region. canary Islands course on desalination and renewables The European Desalination Society has announced a four-day intensive course on Wind and Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Powered Desalination Systems (Reverse Osmosis and Electrodialysis Reversal) to be held in the Canary Islands. The course, being held at the facilities of the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) in Pozo lzquierdo, Gran Canaria, on 4-7 November 2013. This research institute belongs to the Government of the Canary Islands. The facilities of Pozo Izquierdo are probably the most diverse in existence for research, testing and development of renewable energy (RE) technologies and their applications. It is located about 40 km from Las Palmas. The main purpose of this course is to provide experts, professionals and postgraduate students from any country with the latest knowledge of the different existing systems and technologies on desalination powered by wind and solar PV. More specifically, the course will instruct on the basic theory of desalination using RE, the experiences acquired so far, the current state of the art and the most promising initiatives. Theory lessons will be complemented with technical visits and practical sessions using the facilities of ITC, including a wide set of desalination units powered by RE. The accommodation will be in a hotel located in the touristic area of the island and the organization will provide transport to ITC (about 15 minutes). south cEntrAl MEMbrAnE AssocIAtIon Workshop announced for El paso in november The South Central Membrane Association (SCMA) has announced a workshop on Operations & Theory of Membranes on 7 November 2013. The workshop will be held at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Desalination Facility in El Paso, Texas. It will focus on membrane technology and elements used for water treatment facilities. Discussions will focus on how membrane plants are operated, influences of factors such as temperature and pressure and what to be looking out for. The workshop will discuss how membrane elements are made and examined during troubleshooting efforts. Finally, a brief review of water chemistry in membrane operations and some of the mathematics related to membrane plants will be presented. This workshop would be useful to operators new to membrane operations as well as a refresher course for experienced operators. A brochure in pdf format can be downloaded from the SCMA website.
