TRialS On OThER POndS Trials on other feed ponds with even higher solids were executed to see the effect on possible seasonal algae bloom, especially during the spring. Here the operation was similar to the previous pond, showing it could handle such high amounts of solids. Another positive outcome was the steady decrease of required coagulant dosing. Using smart dosing of this coagulant and relating it to the performance of the membranes, reduction in dosing was achieved, which supports additional decrease of operating expenses. The effect of the mechanical cleaning options (back flushing, air scour, forward flushing) turned out to be so effective that the expected chemical enhanced back flushes were required at a lower frequency than anticipated. Full SCalE Since the positive outcome of the demonstration plant, the two full-scale plants have adopted the revised process, which applies just UF and UV, without the extended DAF and media filtration pretreatment. The evaluation proved that this new process is a very positive solution: l Proven process conditions favoring direct filtration l Reduced capital investments on the given jobs of Aus$ 1 million (US$ 922,000) each l Reduced annual operating expenses of Aus$ 400,000 (US$ 369,000) each l Reduced installation footprint. The awarded order resulted in two plants in Karratha and South Hedland with the DAF recycling process.
