PROJECTS buildings owned by Aguas Chañar to operate at 500 L/s. The second implementation phase proposes the construction of a pipeline parallel to the existing one, with a capacity of 500 L/s, using a strip of Agua Chañar easement, which runs from Caldera storage reservoir to the reservoir in the Piedra Colgada sector of Copiapo. The project will take 18 months to construct and its estimated life is 25 years. The EIS is currently with the Servicio de Evaluación Ambiental for approval. Watsonville Area Water Recycling Project, Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency. Funding: US$ 4 million The Watsonville Area Water Recycling Project is a joint effort by the City of Watsonville and the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency, and is intended to reduce overdrafting of groundwater resources and subsequent seawater intrusion. This project provides 4,000 acre-feet (4.9 million m3) of recycled water per year for irrigation by blending effluent from the city's wastewater treatment plant with higher quality water to reduce salinity. REClamaTiOn fundS REuSE in CalifORnia and nORTh mExiCO Albuquerque Metropolitan Area Water Reclamation & Reuse Project. Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority. Federal Funding: US$ 1,887,317 The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority will use the funds to design and construct an expanded treatment system at the Southside Water Reclamation Plant. The project is expected to save 2,500 acre-feet (3.08 million m3) of water annually in addition to the 3,000 acre-feet (3.7 million m3) of reclaimed water being produced by other components of the main project. Five congressionally authorized water reclamation and reuse projects in California and New Mexico, USA, will receive costshared funding for planning, design and construction of their projects, following a Bureau of Reclamation announcement on 21 May 2013. The five projects are: Long Beach Area Water Reclamation Project Alamitos Barrier Recycled Water Project Expansion, Water Replenishment District of Southern California. Funding: US$ 1,712,683 The Alamitos Barrier Recycled Water Project Expansion will increase the effluent treatment capacity of the Leo J Vander Lans Water Treatment Facility located in Long Beach, California from 3 to 8 MGD (11,000 to 30,000 m3/d). North Bay Water Reuse Program, Sonoma County Water Agency. Funding: US$ 4 million The North Bay Water Reuse Program will provide recycled water to agricultural, environmental, industrial, and landscape uses throughout Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties in northern California. The program will include upgrades of treatment processes and construction of storage, pipelines and pump station facilities to distribute recycled water. San Jose Area Water Reclamation & Reuse Program, City of San Jose. Funding: US$ 4 million This is a joint effort of local municipalities and water districts administered by the City of San Jose to serve recycled water throughout Santa Clara County. Current infrastructure includes more than 120 miles (190 km) of pipeline, four pump stations and 9.5 million gallons (36,000 m3) of storage. in bRiEf ____ For more details, visit www.desalination.biz __ PalESTinian PRESidEnT gETS ufm gaza dESalinaTiOn REPORT A detailed report regarding the progress of the Gaza Desalination Facility project was presented to the Palestinian president, Mahmound Abbas, at a meeting on 17 June 2013 by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). UfM deputy secretary general for environment and water, Dr Rafiq Husseini presented the report at the Presidential Office in Ramallah. Ways for gathering support for implementing this vital project were discussed in light of the existing arab and international commitments to provide financial support for its implementation. The prime minister and his deputies will consult all relevant parties for proceeding with the implementation of this project. The Deputy Prime Minister, Abu-Amr, said that the government aspires to the quick implementation of this project, given the tightening water crisis in the Strip, as 90% of the water is not suitable for drinking or agriculture. He also stressed that "what makes the Gaza Desalination Facility project even more urgent is the fact that the water crisis in the Strip would escalate at an alarming rate over the coming three years." Similarly, the issues of electricity and wastewater treatment were discussed. JaPan fundS dESalinaTiOn fOR fOuR fiJi iSlandS The Water Authority of Fiji in the south Pacific announced on 29 May 2013 that four of Fiji's outer islands will now be using desalination plants as an alternative water-supply source. The project, costing F$ 2.5 million (US$ 1.34 million), has been funded by the Japanese government under the PALM5 Pacific Environment Community Fund through the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat. Salalah iWPP OffiCially OPEnEd in Oman The Salalah Independent Water & Power Plant in Oman, which includes a 69,000 m3/d seawater desalination plant completed in May 2012, was officially opened on 19 May 2013. Built by Singapore's Sembcorp Industries, the plant | 24 | Desalination & Water Reuse | August-September 2013 will provide water and power, from its 445 MW gasfired power plant, under a 15-year power and water purchase agreement with the Oman Power & Water Procurement Company, which is wholly owned by the Government of Oman. COunCillORS OPPOSE hunTingTOn bEaCh The City of Huntington Beach in California voted on 6 May 2013 to allow council members to individually send letters to the California Coastal Commission opposing the coastal development permit for a seawater desalination plant which the previous council had approved in 2010. Poseidon Resources, which recently began construction work on the Carlsbad seawater desalination plant, proposes to build a similar 50 MGD (189,000 m3/d) plant in Huntington Beach.
