Signatories also exceeded the packagingreduction target of 15%, managing to
reduce packaging by 25% against a
2007 baseline. The four-year voluntary
agreement ran from 2009 to 2012.
As well as Homebase, Wickes and
B&Q, companies signed up to the
commitment include AkzoNobel UK
Decorative Paints, Argos, Crown Paints
and Henkel.
WRAP's chief executive Liz Goodwin

have improved product and packaging
design that make recycling easier. There
is now clearer recycling guidance for
suppliers and consumers, particularly
with the greater use of the On-Pack
Recycling Label in store."
A spokesperson for Argos and
Homebase parent company, Home
Retail Group, told SB that it had made
great progress in cutting waste from its
stores, offices and distribution centres.
"We recycle 92% of our operational
waste, a figure which has increased year
on year since 2006. Our colleagues also
do their bit to help reduce waste," said
the spokesperson.
The 'Argos Cares' and the Homebase
'Putting Waste in its Place' programmes
encourage colleagues to segregate waste
at store, preventing it from going to
landfill and minimising the impact on
the environment.
The spokesperson added: "We are
always looking for the most efficient,
economical and responsible product
packaging by working collaboratively
with stakeholders and suppliers. We
are reducing the amount of product
packaging and using reusable packaging
where we can".
