Radar 5/7 Executive director of TFT, Scott Poynton, said: "APP's shift towards a policy of No Deforestation is hugely significant. As the largest forest product business in an extremely sensitive area, APP is now in a position of leadership, a stunning reversal in light of its past reputation. The new APP Forest Conservation Policy de-links the company from natural forest destruction and recognises the rights of indigenous and local communities." Biofuels CEOs call for uptake of advanced sustainable biofuels The CEOs of seven leading European biofuel producers and airlines have launched a new industry led initiative to speed up the deployment of advanced sustainable biofuels in Europe. Leaders of Chemtex, British Airways, BTG, Chemrec, Clariant, Dong Energy and UPM are joining forces to ensure that all transport sectors begin using advanced sustainable biofuels. In the European Union, 10% of all fuels must be alternative fuels by 2020, with the majority being biofuels. The initiative, called Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels, aims to support the development of second generation biofuels in Europe, which, it is estimated, could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 65%, according to the industry leaders. The drive will aim to reduce the use of first generation biofuels, made from corn, wheat, soy or palm, which can provide only modest reductions in greenhouse gases and can push up food prices. The Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels has established a common strategy based on several actions aimed at accelerating market penetration and technology deployment and use. These include accelerating research and innovation into emerging biofuel technologies, working together with the supply chain to further develop worldwide accepted sustainability certification and establishing financing structures to facilitate the implementation of sustainable biofuel projects. Plans have also been put in place to address national policy makers, the European Commission and the European Parliament, with a single voice, and invite the rest of the sustainable biofuels industry to follow them on the same path. A statement said: "We believe that second generation biofuels – the "Leaders" stated during the meeting – are also key for the reduction of fossil energy imports in the EU".
