It was the hottest ever in Australia and in Russia. The global aver- age temperature for the last decade is also expected to be the highest recorded, Australia is still being ravaged by bushfires, some of them amalgamating into super-fires, putting pressure on beleaguered prime minister Scott Morrison to change his stance on support for fossil fuels. Morrison was elected in August 2018 as a staunch defender of the mining industry and as a leader lukewarm on emission reductions. With wildfires having now killed 28 people, claimed 2,000 homes and consumed millions of acres of land and wildlife, he recently told a TV station: "We want to reduce emissions and do the best job we possibly can and get better and better and better at it."
