While most readers will have heard of
Northumbrian Water's Kielder Water,
they might not have realised that the
reservoir – despite being the largest
man-made lake in northern Europe
and able to hold 200 billion litres
of water – is just a small part of the
Kielder Water & Forest Park, which is
also home to the Kielder Observatory.
Chosen as one of the locations
in the UK that has the least amount
of intrusive light pollution, Kielder
Observatory is England's first and
Europe's largest International
Dark Sky Park. The astronomical
facility has now expanded its events
programme to more than 700 a
year. Like Northumbrian Water, the
