12 ALLIANCES 2020 ALLIANCES 2020: SCOTTISH WATER A partnership between US built environment giant Black & Veatch and UK infrastructure specialist Amey was appointed as one of three alliances covering Scottish Water's SR15 regulatory period. The aBV team is the utility's wastewater infrastructure alliance partner during the SR15 regulatory period. As such, it is responsible for construction projects to improve Scottish Water's wastewater networks. This largely consists of replacing old sewers that cause internal and external flooding of properties when they get blocked. The alliance will also construct storage tanks and screens to improve sewer overflow systems, ensuring the environmental quality of burns, rivers and coastal waters continues to improve. The alliance is currently delivering a £15 million investment project in Glasgow's West End to help improve the environment and water quality in the River Kelvin (pictured above). It involves the installation of new and improved wastewater infrastructure, including underground combined sewer overflow chambers and upgraded pipework. This new infrastructure will help prevent items that are wrongly flushed down the toilet – items like rags, baby wipes, plastic cotton buds, etc – from overflowing into the River Kelvin during severe storm events and reduce the frequency and volume of wastewater spillages in storm conditions. A £5 million investment in Argyll and Bute to improve and protect the coastal waters around the Holy Loch and parts of the Firth of Clyde, involving upgrades to the existing sewer infrastructure and the construction of underground septic tanks, was also entrusted to aBV. Some of the recently completed projects aBV has carried out include replacing a vital pipe crossing which spans the River Spey at Fochabers in Moray, helping to safeguard Scotland's fastest flowing river, as well as replacing a 265-metre long cast iron outfall pipe on Limekilns beach, near the Firth of Forth, along with building 45 new concrete supports to hold it above the seabed. The latter scheme was delivered to help improve the local wastewater network and protect the natural environment. CLIENT: Scottish Water PARTNERS: Amey, Black & Veatch CONTRACT: Programme management, design, stakeholder engagement, construction of sewer infrastructure TERM: Until 2021 Tackling Scotland's wastewater infrastructure aBV Appointed on a six-year contract estimated to be worth £360 million over the course of SR15, the Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) is a partnership between Morrison Utility Services and infrastructure giant AECOM. As water infrastructure alliance partner, CWA is responsible for the delivery of construction projects to improve water supply networks north of the border, with the scope of work including programme management together with the design and construction of works. This includes new assets, renewals, modifications, maintenance and refurbishment of water networks and pumping stations. The alliance is charged with building large- diameter, cross-country trunk mains as part of Scottish Water's programme of building resilience into its water network. Earlier this year, CWA was tasked with the £30 million project to improve services to more than 54,000 people in parts of the Bearsden, Milngavie, Clydebank and Strathblane areas by changing the source of the area's water supply from Burncrooks Water Treatment Works in West Stirlingshire to Milngavie WTW in East Dunbartonshire. The project will involve the installation of around 8 miles of new water mains, the transfer of supply from Burncrooks WTW to Milngavie WTW and the decommissioning of Burncrooks WTW. CWA has also been handed responsibility for renewing over 9km of strategic water mains between Eela Water water treatment works and Sullom Voe oil terminal in Shetland as part of a £7 million project.
