The world's largest single solar plant
has begun generating electricity.
The Noor Abu Dhabi plant cost
nearly $900 million to build and
comprises 3.2 million solar panels. It
covers 8km sq and has a peak capac-
ity of 1.2GW, which is enough to power
around 90,000 homes in the country.
The plant is owned by the Emirates
Water and Electricity Company and
was built by a joint venture between
Abu Dhabi Power and a consortium
of Japan's Marubeni Corp and China's
Jinko Solar Holding.
The United Arab Emirates Energy
Strategy 2050 sets the country the
target of increasing the contribution
of renewables in the energy mix to 50
