More than 70,000 homes and busi-
nesses in the New York borough of
Manhattan were without power for
as long as five hours last Saturday
evening a•er an equipment failure at
a substation.
Large parts of the subway were
shut down and people were trapped in
li•s during the outage, which plunged
Times Square into darkness and led to
the cancellation of shows on Broad-
way and at Madison Square Garden.

at 6.47pm but that all six affected
networks were restored by midnight.
