Yorkshire Water has opened a
£72 million anaerobic digestion plant
at Knostrop Energy & Recycling Facil-
ity in Leeds – the company's single
biggest investment in the past five
years. It will significantly reduce the
carbon footprint of the site.
Sludge is imported from across the
Yorkshire Water region and treated
in the digesters, which can treat
131 tonnes a day. Aˆer two weeks, the
digesters have converted the sludge
into fertiliser that is used for agricul-
ture and created a biogas that is used
to generate electricity. The biogas will
generate enough power to run 55 per
cent of the site, the equivalent of pow-
ering 7,600 homes.
Yorkshire Water has an ambition
to be carbon neutral by 2030, and has
Digesters cut
