20 | 12TH - 18TH JULY 2019 | UTILITY WEEK High viz Yorkshire Water has opened a £72 million anaerobic digestion plant at Knostrop Energy & Recycling Facil- ity in Leeds – the company's single biggest investment in the past five years. It will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the site. Sludge is imported from across the Yorkshire Water region and treated in the digesters, which can treat 131 tonnes a day. Aˆer two weeks, the digesters have converted the sludge into fertiliser that is used for agricul- ture and created a biogas that is used to generate electricity. The biogas will generate enough power to run 55 per cent of the site, the equivalent of pow- ering 7,600 homes.
