Mexican materials group Cemex has
invested in Energy Vault, a Californian
start-up that stores energy in concrete
blocks.
The technology uses the same
principles as pumped hydro, but the
water is replaced by custom-made
cylindrical blocks. Energy Vault says
the low-cost blocks, together with its
patented system design and control
so•ware, let it deliver the benefits
of a pumped hydro system but at a
lower price.
The deal with Cemex will give
Energy Vault access to a distribution
network for its "storage towers". Gon-
zalo Galindo, Cemex Venture's chief
executive, said: "Energy storage that
enables power to be delivered for less
than the cost of fossil fuels is critical
