That seems to be the general consensus when thinking about the options for decarbonising heat. At our recent Future of Heat conference attendees heard about some of the potential options, including hydrogen, biomethane, electri cation and carbon capture use and storage (CCUS). You can read a full review of the event on page 28. One thing that is clear is that there's real support behind the Committee on Climate Change's (CCC) recent recommendations to move beyond an 80 per cent target and deliver net zero emissions by 2050. Speaking at the event, Tom Thackray from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), commented: "We feel that the Committee on Climate Change report marks a moment in time for everyone to sit up and take notice of the low carbon agenda. There's real momentum behind it now and we need to capture that. In this area we need a clear plan that industry, consumers and government buys into. It isn't one of those things where we can continue to kick the can down the road. We need a commitment to nd out what works by trialling more things. I'm convinced that many of the required solutions can be unlocked." These solutions are already starting to be unlocked, but as Duncan Botting highlights in his article on page 14, it really is going to take a collaborative e" ort to help deliver the 2050 goal. The managing director of Global Smart Transformation looks at the role and impact that the electricity and gas industry have on others ability to deliver solutions to climate change. It's well worth a read. At the time of writing I've just got back from Utility Week Live (look out for a review in the next issue) in Birmingham. This year's event featured the rst ever Gas Innovation Showcase (GIS). The showcase brought together the ve UK gas distribution and transmission networks - Cadent, National Grid Gas Transmission, Northern Gas Networks, SGN, and Wales & West Utilities - and the industry's trade association, the Energy Networks Association (ENA). One of the key projects showcased over the two days is a new initiative to explore Gas Decarbonisation Pathways. This involves all ve gas networks and aims to build a low cost, low carbon network and develop new technologies that make the most of biogas, bioSNG, hydrogen and smart hybrid heating systems. It's great to see collaboration in action and an acknowledgement that a multitude of tailored solutions is the way forward. Gas Decarbonisation Pathways.
