www.wwtonline.co.uk | JUNE 2019 | 37 Static Sludge Thickener The Static Sludge Thickener, by Plantwork Systems (PWS) is a very compact sludge thickening device devel- oped from the original de Hoxar Spiral Separator. PWS has enhanced the original Spiral design and owns the IPR for the technology. The developments have been specifically targeted at reducing the costs of handling sludge for several applications. The thick- ener produces energy-rich sludge which is typically 6% solids, and saving one stage of additional sludge treatment. The technology was shortlisted in this year's Water Industry Awards. OTHER TOP PICKS FOR SLUDGE Next month: Actuators, motors and drives THE DETAILS SEEPEX Smart Air Injection (SAI) sludge conveying using compressed air and polymer injections● conveying capacity 0.5m 3 to 15m 3 per hour● pressure up to 4 bar● appropriate for sludge with dry solids of 20-40 per cent – conveys sludge up 1,000m What is it? SAI uses compressed air and polymer injections to convey sewage sludge over distances of up to 1,000m. It was initially developed for environmental applications and is particularly useful for pumping dewatered sludge with a dry matter content of 20-40 per cent, whether in thermal processing, recycling or agriculture. What's so good about it? The solution can be customised according to the individual requirements of the customer and their pumped media. Boasting low capital expenditure and low operating costs, the system enables reduced energy consumption through low pressure requirements, comes with little maintenance costs as it is maintain-in-place, and is easy to integrate into existing automation and control systems. Its enclosed pipework means there are no unpleasant odours or rainfall dilution. What they say: "SEEPEX smart progressive cavity pumps and control systems are used widely in water and wastewater treatment wherever low to highly viscous, aggressive or abrasive media must be conveyed accurately," SEEPEX UK MD Peter McGarian says. The Knowledge Products: Sludge treatment and disposal Borger Rotary Lobe Pumps By using a Borger Rotary Lobe Pump, a leading disposal com- pany has made substantial savings on traditionally high procurement and operation costs by being able to use its PE tanks as mobile units. The disposal company wanted an easier and more cost-eff ective way to use PE tanks in order to avoid high vehicle tare weight. With a compact design, the Borger Rotary Lobe Pump can be installed on a pick-up truck and powered hydrauli- cally using the PTO (power take-off ) from the pick-up truck's engine. A three-way valve enables several tanks to be loaded in the pick-up truck or fi lled on a trailer. Franklin Miller Super Shredder The Super Shredder in-line disintegrator easily reduces tough solids directly in sludge or raw sewage lines. The in-line macerator reduces tough wastewater solids to fine bits with a unique, high-flow, spheri- cal rotor design. The unit is specifically designed for high capacity and minimal headloss, and with a high percentage of open area, remains practically invisible to flow. The equipment is simple to install in straight- through pipe systems and quickly goes to work protecting pumps and enhancing the operation of process equipment. PRODUCT OF THE MONTH
