Firstly, Electricity North West chief executive Peter Emery tells us why the company is putting decarbonisation at the heart of its plans on page 8. At our recent Network Forum event decarbonisation was high on the agenda in the exible networks stream with Cadent and SP Energy Networks both talking about it as part of their presentations. You can read a review of the event on page 26. When thinking about the decarbonisation of heat the UK has resolved, by 2050, to reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent of their level in 1990. Developments have been made on the heat side and there's currently trials involving blending hydrogen into the gas network. The Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Select Committee recently released a report on carbon, capture, usage and storage (CCUS). The report suggests that the production of low-carbon hydrogen should be prioritised, something that has been welcomed by Energy Networks Association chief executive David Smith. He said: "We strongly welcome the Committee's – ndings, especially the need for government to outline clear steps and targets to match its policy ambitions, prioritise the production of low-carbon hydrogen, and fast-track commercial scale CCUS projects from 2023. "This technology is critical to tackling our greatest challenges including widespread deployment of low-carbon hydrogen to decarbonise heat and transport. A 'whole systems' approach to decarbonisation is needed, which facilitates hydrogen as well as smart hybrid systems and electri– cation." While there may be some uncertainty over which route the UK will take to decarbonising heat – electri– cation, hydrogen networks or a hybrid system – energy networks and their supply chain will continue to do everything they can to respond to the emissions target.
