To support those aims, the company has created a capital design department, which has been tasked with designing and supporting the delivery of the company's upgrade projects. As part of those plans, Severn Trent will work with a greater number of construction partners over the coming years. "To prepare for the future, it's essential we enhance our expert client capability and build a team of first-rate engineers and design specialists," Ian Kirkaldy said following his appointment as head of capital design last year. "By creating an in-house capital design function, we can provide more innovative, faster and cost-effective solutions for our customers." The company said it will continue to hold collaborative monthly meetings with the supply chain to strengthen relationships with contractors and identify opportunities to drive efficiencies and innovation. In its PR19 submission, the company added: "We're changing the way we work with the supply chain, so that we work with a combination of tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers. We believe this will allow us better access to innovation deep in the supply chain and the ability to contract directly with the experts we need. This is a more complex operating model but we believe that in addition to innovation benefits, it will also spread supply chain risk for us." To ensure resilience, the company is introducing extra contingency plans to determine when key risks – including contractors' financial instability – might affect performance, while the 'sustainable supply chain charter' encourages key suppliers to set ambitious targets to boost social value.
