While its reported revenue for 2018 fell to £1,463.7 million from £1,684 million and operating profit dropped to £43.1 million from £47.2 million, it reported further growth in other areas. "This has been a year of continued progress at Costain," company chair Dr Paul Golby said. "The business has delivered another set of strong results with further growth in underlying profit at enhanced margins. We also ended the year with a record higher-quality order book of £4.2 billion. "This success has been driven by providing smart infrastructure solutions which expertly integrate consultancy, complex delivery, technology and asset optimisation services." Costain enjoyed significant success in Natural Resources, which covers water, power, oil and gas, with total revenue for the division hitting £390.3 million from £343.9 million a year earlier, while underlying operating profit nearly tripled to £14.1 million. A major part of that growth was down to water, where Costain offers what it describes as "technology-based engineering solutions to UK water utility companies across the asset lifecycle". The company has AMP6 contracts with Thames Water, Severn Trent and Southern Water and is also part of a joint venture to deliver the east section of the Thames Tideway project, while last year it completed its work on the £100 million Shieldhall Tunnel for Scottish Water in Glasgow. For AMP7, the company has said it is targeting advisory, asset delivery programmes and capital maintenance programmes, with a capital delivery design-and- build framework for Severn Trent already in the bag. Alex Vaughan, who replaces Andrew Wyllie as CEO in May, has said he is looking forward to "continuing our strategy as we enter a new era of opportunity". 14 LEADERS 2018 The UK's leading specialist pump hire company capable of up to 9800m³/hr and 20 bar pressures.
