18 WET NEWS APRIL 2019 | wwtonline.co.uk U tilities specialist Develop Training Limited (DTL) has won a contract to deliver an apprenticeship in water mains laying for South Staffs Water. DTL, an approved provider under the apprenticeship levy scheme, is now putting nine apprentices through the 13-month programme, includ- ing hands-on learning at its newly-opened mains-laying facility. Daryll Garavan, DTL's deliv- ery manager for the water industry, said: "Having this new facility is ideal. There is plenty of space for several can- didates to work on it at once instead of having to wait their turn, and the practice area A egion Corporation has rea- ligned its Insituform busi- ness units in the UK to bal- ance its organisational, capability, resources and cost structure to match the needs of the local market. The announcement to close Insituform Technologies Ltd and the English division of Envi- ronmental Techniques Ltd oper- ation based in Wakefield was made on Aegion's quarterly earnings call on February 28, 2019. Existing contracts and business obligations will be ful- filled prior to the closure. Insituform Linings Ltd, through its MTC product sales division, will now begin to pen- etrate the England and Wales market with both felt and glass V EGA Controls has announced that it has achieved the first WRAS approval of a submersible pres- sure sensor as a whole device. This means a full product certificate number registration and listing on the WRAS approved product list. VEGA Controls said the VEG- AWELL submersible pressure sensor is the first and only trans- mitter of this type to be fully WRAS certified and meets the requirements of Regulation 31 (4) (b). The WRAS certification means it will not contaminate or harbour microbial growth when used in potable or drinking water. This enables it to be deployed anywhere on the water supply chain: from the heart of a water treatment facility to monitoring in the network or measurement of drinking water on business premises. With ranges from 0.1 Bar to 60 Bar, the sensor has been fully laboratory tested and assessed includes numerous water mains connections that people can hone their skills on." DTL opened the new water mains training area last year at its Derby training centre, one of seven across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The candidates, mostly from the Tipton and Walsall area, are made up of five South Staffs Water employees and four new recruits from OnSite Specialist Maintenance, which like South Staffs Water is also part of the South Stafford- shire plc group. They are expected to complete the 'Network Construction Oper- ations Water Mains Laying' course in January. liners. Historically, this market has not been a primary focus due to the presence of the Eng- lish contracting division. "Insituform Linings is strate- gically placed to target contrac- tors servicing the pipeline reha- bilitation market in England and Wales, as well as the rest of the United Kingdom, through the supply of high-quality prod- ucts and services to support the advancement of trenchless technology," Mark Bates, man- aging director of Insituform Lin- ings Ltd, said. Insituform Linings Ltd man- ufactures both dry and resin impregnated CIPP felt and pres- sure liners up to diameter 2,500mm and UV glass liners up to diameter 1,200mm. as a compete device/assembly. This was on top of the materials of the individual components, which included testing and scrutiny of their composition, design and surface finishes. A newly certified material has also been added: the 99.9 per cent pure CERTEC Sapphire ceramic that makes up the sensor dia- phragm of the sensor. This is designed to make the measure- ment of the devices highly accurate and repeatable with almost zero- dri¥, yet robust, pressure-shock and overload resistant. Suitable applications include clean water reservoirs, pump con- trol, storage or small header tanks and associated pipework, found either in the water company sup- ply or end users on- site storage or 'towns water' buffer tanks. Additionally, it features inte- grated lightning protection as standard, PE cable lengths up to 1000m, as well as an optional PT100 output for water tempera- ture measurement. WHAT IT IS: This mobile unit effectively removes suspended solids from wastewater, using inclined plates to maximise the settlement area, and has been developed with a view to maximising performance within a small footprint. The new unit incorporates a large sludge hopper, with steeper sides, for improved sludge thickening and de-sludging performance while the unit's double discharge weir enhances flow distribution through the lamella plates leading to improved discharge performance. WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT IT: The HB50M is manufactured with dedicated lifting points and a removable skid, which incorporates fork lift slots. For permanent installations, the unit can be provided with feet and bolt holes rather than a skid. The unit is normally supplied with an auto-desludging system, where the frequency and duration of desludging pump operation can be set by the user. In addition, a side access walkway is available, offering inspection and maintenance access to the top of the unit. As with all of Siltbuster's settlement tanks, the HB50M can also be combined with its range of chemical dosing equipment allowing enhanced removal of fine, slow settling solids where required. WHAT THEY SAY: Dafydd Passe, senior process design engineer at SPS, said: "Whilst it has been designed primarily to suit the requirements of the municipal sector, it can of course be used for many other industrial applications where suspended solids need to be removed from wastewater." Jacopa Fluidyne FFP Wastewater technology specialists Jacopa is making its pilot-scale, Fluidyne FFP fixed plate cloth media filter trial unit – which removes phosphorus from wastewater to challenging new lower levels – available to water companies and others who wish to evaluate the technology through a site-based pilot trial. Fluidyne cloth media filters feature an innovative fixed panel design that uses simple gravity to produce filtration and backwash flow. The F160206 trial unit will remove suspended solids (and the associated BOD) from domestic and industrial wastewaters. The high perfor- mance, low-operating cost, cloth media filter is suitable for tertiary treatment for both large and small wastewater treatment applications. PIRANHA heat recovery system SHARC Energy has launched the PIRANHA wastewater heat recovery system in the UK and EU. A compact wastewater heat recovery system that offers both a strong commercial opportunity and reliable, renewable heat to medium-sized businesses and premises, the PIRANHA sits alongside the larger SHARC systems and effectively recovers heat from the wastewater that we flush down the drains every day. Suitable for buildings such as hotels, nursing homes, student accommodation or apartment blocks, the self-con- tained system intercepts wastewater and extracts the heat using a unique heat exchanger and uses an in-built heat pump to return hot water to the building at around 60ºC. Wananchi UK water system Wananchi UK has worked with thermoplastic specialists Structure-flex to create a water purification system for the British Army that features a 1,000 litre open-top tank. The Wananchi system, which allows troops in hostile environments to extract, purify and store water from rivers and other sources, uses an innovative, patented, filtration system, integral pump, and power pack and purifies the water in a few minutes. Water is then stored in the thermoplastic tank which incorporates a foam-filled collar that rises unaided as the water is introduced. Produced in a variety of PVC and TPU coated technical textiles and in capacitates up to 100,000 litres, the tank comes complete with a durable 630gsm protective PVC groundsheet.
