UTILITY WEEK | 29TH MARCH - 4TH APRIL 2019 | 5 UK Power Networks staff have co-designed a new scouting badge aimed at helping young people become more energy aware. Scouts will be able to earn the local knowledge badge by learning how to stay safe around substations and cables, and by increasing local awareness of the free help available to those in the community who rely on electricity. The UKPN staff, who are also scout leaders, will be testing it with their local groups, including the 25th Ealing, Thurston and Rendlesham Scout Groups. 16MW EDF Energy has signed a partnership with energy storage provider Anesco to optimise a combined 16MW of solar and battery assets at the Clayhill solar farm in Bedfordshire. 545,000 tonnes A new energy-from-waste facility at Rookery South Pit in Bedfordshire will have a power output of more than 60MW and be able to process 545,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually. £1bn Thames Water is proposing to invest £1 billion in technology to "revolutionise" its operations and boost efficiency by 20 per cent. WINTER RESILIENCE DASHBOARD 2018/19 TOTAL NUMBERS FOR STORMS ALI, BRONAGH, CALLUM, DEIRDRE, ERIK, FREYA AND GARETH Electricity networks demonstrated their resilience this winter, recording a 99.9 per cent reliability rate despite a string of storms battering Britain, according to figures from the ENA and the Met Office. Extreme conditions, including heavy downpours and windspeeds of more than 90mph in some areas, saw only a fraction of connections – at 0.23 per cent – affected. Average power cut times came in at 35 minutes, with more than half a million connections restored and 605,546 priority services register customers contacted. "I know sometimes people think that's an exercise in paper pushing. It's actually an incredibly helpful way of setting out the priorities." Energy and clean growth minister Claire Perry promises to provide more guidance on the government's intentions in a roadmap for heat decarbonisation due to be published in early 2020.
