4 | APRIL 2019 | WWT | www.wwtonline.co.uk AECOM has appointed Mark Southwell as Managing Director, Civil Infrastructure for the UK and Ireland. Southwell, who was previously at Jacobs, will be responsible for all aspects of AECOM's Civil Infrastructure business in the UK and Ireland, which includes the Transport, Water, Ports and Power teams. Tessa Harding has joined Thomson Environmental Consultants as the new director of water. Harding, who has previously worked for AECOM and THA Aquatic, will be leading a team delivering projects that include freshwater, marine and estuarine ecology. The Talk: April ROUND UP PEOPLE MOVES United Utilities Project Director John Hilton surveys the route of the new pipeline for the £300M West Cumbria Supplies Project. 6000 steel pipeline sections, each 14m long, have been delivered by road in 1,146 heavy truckloads along Cumbria's narrow roads. Fall in support for nationalisation There has been a substantial fall in public support for water nationalisation, according to a new survey by ComRes, commissioned by Water UK. Two in five (42%) British adults say they support the nationalisation of water and sewerage services in England, with 37% opposed. The finding contrasts with those of a poll by Populus for the Legatum Institute in September 2017 which found that 83% of the population were in favour of the water industry being owned and run by the government. Water firms back sanitary bag drive Six of the UK's major water companies have joined an initiative to distribute disposal bags which encourage customers to put sanitary items in the bin rather than flushing them. Anglian Water, Severn Trent Water, Southern Water, Welsh Water, Northern Ireland Water and Yorkshire Water are now offering FabLittleBag to their customers as part of their education campaigns to reduce the millions spent each year on clearing fatbergs and other sewer blockages. Flushed sanitary waste contributes to the fatberg problem by forming the scaffolding for the build-up of greasy blockages in sewers. Shortlist out for water awards The shortlist has been unveiled for the Water Industry Awards, the dedicated awards scheme for the water industry organised by WWT and WET News. The 13th annual awards will be handed out at a glittering black-tie dinner in Birmingham on May 20th. New categories this year recognise consultants, water retailers and offsite manufacture. The awards are sponsored by Galliford Try, Marshalls CPM, nmcn and Weholite. Find out more and book your table now at waterindustryawards.co.uk. PIPES IN PAIRS Costain has announced that Alex Vaughan is to become the company's new CEO. Vaughan, who is currently managing director of the group's natural resources division, will replace Andrew Wyllie, who is retiring to pursue a non- executive career a er 14 years as Costain's CEO.
