IDA The 6th World Water Forum in Marseille is expected to bring together over 25,000 participants, and IDA considers this session as a major opportunity to present desalination to the world as well as present commitments by organizations and companies to energy reduction. The session will be on 14 March 2012 (14:30-16:00). Anyone interested in participating who has ongoing commitments or solutions in this field should contact Leon Awerbuch or Patricia Burke via IDA. Four-day eDs membrane course set for April 2012 Registration has been opened for a 4-day advanced course on Pretreatment, Membrane Fouling & Scaling to be held in Genoa, Italy, on 2-5 April 2012 by the European Desalination Society. The course, includes practice and theory on pretreatment, fouling and scaling in micro- and ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis applied for the production of drinking and industrial water production. The impact of the water source seawater, river water, brackish groundwater and treated domestic wastewater will be discussed in depth. Lecturer Prof Jan C Schippers advises the World Bank and ministries in the Netherlands. He is active in reviewing research projects and publications being a member of the editorial boards of the journals Desalination & Water Treatment, Desalination and Aqua, technical advisor of the executive council of the Middle East Desalination Research Center, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of IWW (Germany) and past president of EDS. Details on www.desline.com. online registration open for eDs solar desalination course Online registration is now available for the European Desalination Societys course on Desalination with Solar Energy in Almeria, Spain, on 18-20 April 2012, which can be combined with the EDS conference in Barcelona on 23-26 April. The general purpose of this 3-day intensive course is to provide experts, professionals and postgraduate students from all around the world with the latest knowledge of the different existing technologies involving the use of solar energy to drive desalination techniques. More specifically, the course will instruct scientists and technicians on the basic principles of desalination using solar energy, the state of the art of the most promising technologies and the experiences acquired so far. Theory lessons will be complemented with visits to the test facilities of Plataforma Solar de Almera operating on solar power production and desalination, which are the most advanced in the Mediterranean area. The course will be given by researchers and scientists from Plataforma Solar de Almera (CIEMAT-PSA). Further details can be found on www.desline.com. eDs course to look at ion-exchange membranes The European Desalination Society has announced details of a course on ion-exchange membranes to be held in Genoa, Italy, on 4-6 June 2012. Ion-Exchange Membrane Processes: Their principle and practical applications will be a three-day intensive course led by Professor Heiner Strathmann. Ion-exchange membranes and their practical utilization in electromembrane processes have gained significant technical and commercial importance in water deionization and purification as well as in electrochemical synthesis and in energy conversion and energy storage. Certain processes such as electrodialysis are mature state-of-the-art techniques, while other processes such as capacitive electrodeionization and electrodialysis with bipolar membranes or the use of ion-exchange membranes in fuel cells and energy conversion are more recent developments which show a large number of interesting applications.
