ida&affiliates IDA releases program details for morocco conference The International Desalination Association released details on 19 January 2012 of the Program Highlights of the Desalination and Sustainability conference 1-2 March 2012 in Casablanca, Morocco. IDA will partner with Societ Marocaine des Membranes et de Dessalement (SMMD) and the National Office of Drinking Water (ONEP) for this symposium, with several ministries lending their support, in addition to the European Desalination Society, which pioneered desalination events in Morocco. The program is chaired by D&WR editorial board member Miguel Angel Sanz for IDA together with Azzedine Elmidaoui and Mahmoud Hafsi from SMMD. The three main sessions will be: Session I- Desalination Experience in Maghreb The first session will cover water plans developed by the various Moroccan Ministries as well as the desalination experiences of the ONEP and Office Chrifien des Phosphates. This session will examine the crucial role that desalinated water plays in the development of specific areas as well as its use in the mining industry and in agriculture. The experiences and plans of neighbouring countries will be also reviewed in this section. Session II- Desalination: Design and Operations The second session will focus on the state of the art in desalination technology as well as future trends. Presentations will cover the main components of a membrane desalination plant: intake and discharges, pretreatment, membranes, energy recovery and efficiency, use of chemicals, and renewable energies. The presentations will show operational results and new improvements. Session III- International Experiences, Financing and Cost Since Morocco has decided to launch components of its desalination plants as build-operate-transfer contracts, this last session will discuss financing and costs of desalination plants. It will also include a review of international experiences in the Mediterranean area and MENA region. These presentations will furnish attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and solutions associated with implementing various desalination plants along with an overview of financing strategies and water costs. The venue will be Le Royal Mansour Mridien. Registration and other event information will be available soon. Sponsorship information is available from Beth Bodo at bbodo@idadesal.org. IDA chooses sIngApore week to lAunch DesAlInAtIon AcADemy The International Desalination Associations (IDAs) newly established Desalination Academy is to be formally launched in conjunction with Singapore International Water Week, 1-5 July 2012. Additional programs are being planned, with one of | 42 | Desalination & Water Reuse | February-March 2012 the sessions to coincide with the Saudi Water & Power Forum in Jeddah next December. The academy will be the premier coordinating school for specialized training in desalination and a higher school for special study in this field, said Corrado Sommariva, president of IDA. It will be a school without geographic boundaries a global learning establishment for the advancement of desalination knowledge, Sommariva added. It will be distinguished from other programs by a variety of factors including its global reach, roster of master instructors, comprehensive curriculum, and plans for certification and accreditation,. The mission of the academy is to provide the highest level of training, education and instruction to individuals, utilities, companies, institutions, universities and other organizations interested in desalination in all its aspects. Our vision is that the academy will be the worlds foremost source for professional training and continuing education on desalination and water reuse. It is a major undertaking that has the full support of our leadership, noted Patricia Burke, IDAs secretary general. Courses will cover detailed exploration of desalination technologies and processes; desalination economics; sustainability and green desalination strategies; and future, innovative and developing technologies. In addition, the academy will offer a more basic course for water industry professionals or other interested parties who wish to gain a better understanding about desalination. Further information will be available on the IDA website, www.idadesal.org. IDA energy tAsk force to run worlD wAter forum sessIon The International Desalination Association (IDA) has organized a session titled Desalination: The Sustainable Solution And Hope For Future Generations at the 6th World Water Forum in Marseille, France, during 12-17 March 2012. IDAs new Energy Task Force (ETF) will present this session aimed at reducing energy consumption in desalination and developing guidelines for reduction of energy in desalination processes, both thermal and membrane, with the specific goal of achieving a 20% energy reduction in desalination by 2015. The ETF will also investigate the use of hybrid processes and alternative energy sources in desalination. At the forum, the ETF will promote and announce commitments to its energy reduction challenge by leading companies, scientific institution, utilities, developers and government agencies. IDA already received several commitments from ministries and companies to improve energy efficiencies and the carbon footprint of desalination. Through the ETF, the IDA will establish a network of interested professionals to share best practices for energy efficiency for desalination. After presentations of successful global desalination programs, there will be a one-hour discussion between panelists and the audience on energy aspects of desalination.
