IDA & Affiliates The International Desalination Association (IDA) and Global Water Intelligence (GWI) have in- troduced the 2018-19 IDA Water Security Handbook. The report provides data and analysis of desalination and water reuse markets worldwide. The report anticipates that in 2019 markets for seawater desalination could record their most active growth since the late 2000s driven by activity in the Middle East particularly. Total cumulative desalina - tion capacity contracted world- wide is 104.7 million m3/d for the 10 years from 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2018. The cumulative number of desalination plants contracted is approximately 20,000. The figure for cumula- tive installed capacity for the same period is 97.4 million m3/d. Total cumulative installed capacity for water reuse is 102 million m3/d for the period from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2017. (Installed capacity data is more robust compared to contracted capac- ity data for water reuse.) Total cumulative contracted capacity for water reuse is 118 million m3/d for the same period. This compares to cumulated contracted capacity in water reuse of 59.7 million m3/d as of 31 December 2009. "IDA has always advocated solutions to water scarcity by supporting the development of the desalination and water reuse industry to secure sus - tainable water and natural re- sources. Over the past decades, our industry has achieved an important reduction in non- conventional water costs, and increased quality, to ensure water sustainability," said IDA president Miguel Angel Sanz. "The demand for clean water increases as climate change and growth of industry and populations continue to impact the world. Desalination and water reuse are non-conven - tional, environmentally-sound water supply solutions which offer solutions to water scar- city. The trends we are seeing point to a broad recognition that these advanced water treatment solutions are es - sential to the health and well- being of people and economies around the world, both now and in the future," said IDA secretary general Shannon McCarthy. "The big breakthrough in the past year has been on the cost of desalination. Recent project tenders in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi have seen the price fall below $0.50/m3 for the first time. Ašer a decade in which price drišed upwards as a re - sult of high materials costs and higher energy costs, this is very good news. Indeed, we expect 2019 to be the best year ever in the desalination market. In terms of water reuse, prices for indirect potable standard water are in the $0.30-$0.40 range, but the market is still held back by public perceptions," said GWI publisher Christopher Gasson. A further breakdown of the market data shows that total cumulated contracted capacity in desalination for the period from 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2018 is as follows: Brackish water 9.97 million m3/d, lower-concentration feed water 9.89 million m3/d, and industrial desalination 19.66 million m3/d. The breakdown by region reveals Middle East 19.16 million m3/d, East Asia- Pacific excluding South Asia 4.6 million m3/d, and for the Americas 9.7 million m3/d. The breakdown for reuse shows total cumulative installed capacity for industrial water reuse at 22.7 million m3/d for the period from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2017. The same data for the same period by region is as follows: Middle East and North Africa 6.2 million m3/d, Asia 29.3 million m3/d, Americas 10.2 million m3/d, and Europe 4.51 million m3/d. IDA has always advocated solutions to water scarcity by supporting the development of the desalination and water reuse industry to secure sustainable water and natural resources.
