The barrier, which was opened by Dr Thérèse Coffey, the floods minister, comprises a 200-tonne rotating barrier that can rotate upwards from the sea floor in minutes, protecting the town from tidal surges. Its design is similar to that of the Thames Barrier. Other elements of the scheme include 1,100 metres of new and refur- bished flood walls and a series of flood gates on the banks of the River Orwell. The Environment Agency project will better protect homes and busi- nesses in Ipswich over the next 100 years from the increased flood risks associated with climate change.
