The risk of floods at the Port Clarence
and Greatham South area in the north
of England has been reduced aer the
completion of the second and final
phase of the £16 million Greatham
South flood alleviation scheme. A
catastrophic breach of flood defences
in 2013 caused millions of pounds of
damage to industry and homes in Port
Clarence village.
The Environment Agency commis-
sioned the BAM Nuttall Mott MacDon-
ald joint venture (JV) to improve flood
embankments at Greatham South to
protect 350 homes and 32 businesses.
Aer a successful initial design phase,
the JV was re-commissioned in early
2017 to provide further detailed design
support and construction. Work
included raising existing defences,
£16m project cuts
flood risk
