MaSSivE hEalTh gRanT aidS ChinO dESalTERS ExPanSiOn California's Western Municipal Water District announced on 28 June 2012 that it had received a "monumental" US$ 51 million grant from the state's Department of Health towards the US$ 130 million expansion of the Chino desalination plants. The grant will fund a portion of the planned Phase 3 Expansion of the Chino I and Chino II Desalter facilities, which will produce an additional 10 MGD (37,850 m3/d) of new water benefitting more than 1.5 million people in the Inland Empire. Western had sought the grant in collaboration with the Chino Basin Desalter Authority, Jurupa Community Services District and the Inland Empire Utilities Agency. The grant comes through the department's Division of Drinking Water & Environmental Management's Prop 50 Chapter 4b: Southern California Projects to Reduce Demand on Colorado River Water. It will enable the distribution of drinking water and minimize brine discharge in to the Pacific Ocean. nEw ZEaland CiTy COMMiSSiOnS MBR waSTEwaTER uPgRadE The city of Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island has become the first city in the country to use a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for wastewater treatment on a major scale. The city was also the nation's first to use the five-stage Bardenpho biological treatment process. Rotorua District Council announced on 12 July 2012 completion of an NZ$ 8.5 million (US$ 6.7 million) upgrade of its 20,000 m3/d wastewater treatment plant which includes the commissioning of new MBR technology to further improve Rotorua's lake water quality. land COMMiSSiOn lOOking aT TExaS dESalinaTiOn The Texas General Land Commission (GLC) has contracted two consulting firms to investigate the possibility of brackish-water desalination north of New Braunfels. Land commissioner Jerry Patterson has announced that the GLC is studying the hydrology and geology of several Permanent School Fund tracts of land along the I-35 corridor with the intention of tapping into Texas' abundant brackish groundwater, desalinating it and selling it. "If the water is there, then I think the School Land Board (of which Patterson is chairman) is ready to invest the time and resources needed to deliver an entirely new and drought-resistant source of water for Central Texas," Patterson said. "This is a game-changer, a commonsense fix for the Texas water crisis." Statesman.com reported on 9 July 2012 that the contracted consultants are Austin-based Intera, a geosciences and engineering company, and Colorado-based Malcolm Pirnie, the water division of engineering company Arcadis.
