UTILITY WEEK | 14TH - 20TH DECEMBER 2018 | 15 Policy & Regulation Analysis T he new premium reports written for Utility Week members this year have ranged from our high-level CEO Insight series, through to an appraisal of the reality of delivering subsidy-free renewables. Here are some of the highlights from the UW 2018 calendar – all available to read on our website, utilityweek.co.uk Flex October saw the first issue of Flex, Utility Week's new quarterly publication highlight- ing technological change within the indus- try. As part of our cultural transformation theme, in this first issue, for example, we look at whether new technology is driving better customer engagement. Is auto-switch- ing the next big thing? And can virtual and augmented reality technology really pro- vide the answer to the skills crisis? We also "download" the 16 apps that no utility firm should be without and for those undergoing transformation there are nuggets of advice too from National Grid's chief information and digital officer, Adriana Karaboutis. Look out for Flex2 on February 15. The first issue is available at: https://utilityweek.co.uk/ flex-issue-1-october-2018/ Guide to Utilities 2018 In October we produced the first Utility Week Guide to Utilities 2018. The guide provides an essential introduction to the complex work- ings of the energy and water markets – how they operate, how they are regulated, the leading companies, and key individuals. https://utilityweek.co.uk/ guide-utilities-2018/ Reports CEO Insight 2018 In September we published the findings from the second iteration of our new regular research survey with industry chief execu- tives. Complemented by more than dozen major interviews, it provides a comprehen- sive stocktake of industry leaders' sentiment on the major issues of the day, from the econ- omy, regulations and Brexit. Blockchain One of the reoccurring themes of the year has been blockchain and what its impact will be on the energy sector. In June, Utility Week published an exclusive Foresight report to answer those questions. Peer-to-peer trading, instant switching and EV charging were among the applications we investigated. https://utilityweek.co.uk/blockchain- applications-priorities-uk-energy-system/ EV-tariffs With the burgeoning EV market, we explored the opportunities for UK energy suppliers with a series of in-depth interviews with retailers about their strategies including, Ecotricity, Eon, Good Energy and Ovo. https://utilityweek.co.uk/ company-insights-electric-vehicle-tariffs/ Subsidy-free renewables This exclusive Foresight report explores whether the end goal of achieving subsidy- free renewables is fact or fiction? Can it ever happen? Is it even desirable? https://utilityweek.co.uk/subsidy-free- renewable-energy-commercial-reality- government-fantasy/ Making the best of Brexit Among the myriad of uncertainties in the sector – exiting the EU is one of the biggest. In July we took an in-depth look at how exit- ing the EU could impact energy companies. https://utilityweek.co.uk/ exclusive-report-making-best-brexit/ Home energy services Home services may offer energy suppliers the path they need to overcome squeezed retail margins and high customer churn. But who's moving to capitalise on this opportunity, and what do their business plans look like? https://utilityweek.co.uk/home-services- new-lease-life-energy-suppliers/ There's much more on utilityweek.co.uk Throughout the year Utility Week has been enriching the knowledge of members with an additional range of specialist resources, in-depth guides and a brand new technology quarterly called Flex.
