Eco-Reuse incorporates a second clean- ing process of IDE's called conservation. Conservation is a periodic flushing of the membrane with permeate. This dissolves scaling on the membrane. The lack of chloramine has a couple more benefits. Firstly, because chlora- mine promotes the formation of toxic N- Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), the chloramine-free technology reduces the NDMA problem. Further, chloramine dos- ing decreases the ultraviolet transmission value (UVT), or transparency, of water. This lowers the effciency of the ultraviolet advanced oxidation process (UV-AOP) system. The demonstration observed that with the chloramine-free Eco-Reuse system, the efficiency of the UV-AOP increased by 30 per cent. Part two: FAT Phase two of the demonstra- tion ran a conventional FAT process for non-potable reuse. The treatment train began with chloramine dos - ing to prevent biofouling on the membranes. Then micro fil - tration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF), to remove suspended solids. The MF/ UF was fol - lowed by reverse osmosis (RO), to filter out the salt and dissolved organic matter such as viruses, and pathogens. Finally, UV-AOP as a polishing step. This treatment meets the regulatory demands of the NPDES federal permit, and was demonstrated as a comparison. Part three: Pulse Flow RO In the third and final phase, IDE is demonstrating its Pulse Flow RO (PFRO) technology. PFRO changes the gauge pres- sures in the RO frequently and rapidly. This creates an unstable environment in the membrane system which prevents scaling, and biofouling. IDE reports that in testing, it has reached 92 to 95 per cent recovery rates.
